Win over fellow parishioners sees us top of the charts

-

The sun was shining last Saturday evening as we headed for Castletownroche to take on neighbours Doneraile in the last game in our group in this opening round of the Junior B County Football championship. Short eight players off the squad, it was all hands-on deck with our selectors thrown back into action.

The ever reliable free taking Cory got scoring underway with an early conversion. Doneraile quickly answered this at the opposite end. Again Cory added another point in the 3rd minute. There was a lull as the game settled, Doneraile came close to a goal, but we were spared as it ended up over the bar. Stalwart Brian O’Reilly got his name on the scoreboard with a super point kicked over. This seemed to settle us and in quick succession, Eoin McHugh added from play and then a converted free and Darragh completed our first half tally with another fine point. Half time saw the scoreline in our favour with a 0-7 to 0-2 lead.

Doneraile got the second half scoring underway with a point in the opening minute. A free won by Haulie and converted by Cory saw our opening score in the 5th minute. Trying to get a score from play seemed to be a battle in the second half, and while we struggled, Doneraile closed the gap and wound up a point up before Eoin McHugh found the posts for us. Cory again converted another free and it was neck and neck with our opponents as the clock tick. In the 30th minute, Winston made a run and got our final point to seal the deal. The whistle blew and we finished on 0-11 to 0-9.

A superb win for us and some great performances once again shown across the field from our experienced men – Alan Sheedy coming off the bench for the game and playing a great game, Eoin McHugh playing a blinder, the two Bs – Barry and Brian again showing superb defence. We now head to the quarter final after topping our group in the Junior B County Football Championship.
