Great win for Fermoy ladies
The final of the Duhallow Shield, Fermoy versus Charleville, was hosted by Mitchelstown Golf Club last Sunday, 1st October. The conditions were almost perfect aside from the heavy ground caused by the continual rainfall of previous days, no fault of the beautifully maintained parkland that is Mitchelstown GC.
A very determined Fermoy team faced their toughest challenge yet against a strong but equally determined Charleville team. A closely tied score up to the 18th where both teams were 2-2, Fermoy sinking the putt and narrowly defeating a gracious but disappointed Charleville. The Fermoy ladies were jubilant with their win made all the more special by the great turnout of supporters to witness their success.
The panel included team managers, Eileen O’Neill and Mary Lysaght and the team included Liz O’Brien, Joan Moloney, Eileen O’Neill, Ray Llewellyn, Pauline Hyland, Catherine Kenneally, Jane O’Riordan, Angela Shealy, Claire O’Sullivan, Helen Mackessy, Nuala Rice, Violet O’Riordan and Marie Dunne.
The Duhallow Shield was last won by Fermoy GC in 2008. For those of us who are not overly familiar with this interclub competition, it is the ladies equivalent of the Avondhu Shield for the men. It is a competition between the six north Cork clubs and the format is a fourball match play. The competing teams include Kanturk, Mallow, Mitchelstown, Charleville, Doneraile and Fermoy.
Our thanks to Mitchelstown Golf Club for the warm welcome extended to both teams and for hosting this competition in such an efficient and professional manner. Congratulations to the Fermoy ladies and managers and our thanks and appreciation also to our supporters.
