Trails and tours a focus for Mitchelstown group

- MARIAN ROCHE

The drivers of the efforts to invigorate Mitchelstown’s tourism industry held their second public meeting in early March in Forrest Hall, where the group confirmed that representatives from the Fáilte Ireland brand, ‘ Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands’ had visited Mitchelstown, enjoyed a tour and provided some useful insight. Ciara O’Brien, speaking on behalf of the organising committee for Mitchelstown’s tourism drive, stressed to local hospitality and food businesses that there is ‘strength in numbers’ in registering their presence on both the Discover Ireland and Visit Ballyhoura webpages.

MITCHELSTOWN MAKERS

In collaboration with The Scullery on Lower Cork Street, a threemonth summer showcase of local craftspeople and their wares will be accommodated in ‘The Mitchelstown Makers’ Space’ if there is sufficient interest; up to six people will be included, who must declare their interest by Friday next week (March 29th).

WALKING TRAILS

As part of the plans to develop the tourism potential of the history of Mitchelstown, a number of volunteers will be organising trial walks and taking feedback and suggestions. The first of these will be hosted by Seamus Fox on this Saturday morning, leaving the Clongibbon at 11am. Suitable for families and children, the tour will take two hours.

VOLUNTEERS

The ‘Mitchelstown Tourism’ group are now looking for people who will volunteer to coordinate a shuttle bus trial, that will look at how the food culture of Mitchelstown and the surrounding areas can be appropriately packaged.

Another volunteer is being sought too to lead a project in cleaning, upgrading, replacing and installing information signs and resources in the great Mitchelstown area.
