Funding approved for local heritage restoration works
€9 million has been announced for 676 heritage projects across the country, with local projects listed among the recipients of the Historic Structures Fund (HSF) and the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) for 2024.
CORK
Under the Historic Structures Fund, €20,000 has been allocated to the Mourneabbey monastic site outside of Mallow, to include the conservation of the curtilage wall. Also in Mallow, the Castle House has been granted €96,000 for repairs to windows, and €10,000 to Lavally Loft, Mallow for works to the roof, walls, doors, windows and shutters. JJ Coppinger’s in Midleton will received €20,000 for works to the damaged and leaking roof.
Under the BHIS in Cork, the following works are to receive funding: €3,747 for windows, doors and other elements at Glenville Park, Glenville; €12,112 for roof works at St Patrick’s Church in Fermoy; €11,970 towards the roof of the thatched cottage at Ballindangan cross; €11,827 for windows and doors at Creagh Castle House in Doneraile; another €11,827 for windows and doors at Midleton College; €5,951.22 for windows and doors in St Mary's Church in Doneraile; €5,415 for windows and doors in St George’s Centre in Mitchelstown; €10,402 for the gate lodge in Annesgrove Gardens in Castletownroche; and €12,748 for the roof works at the thatched house at Curraghgorm,
Mitchelstown.
LIMERICK
In Limerick, three projects have been funded under the Historic Structures Fund. These are Plassey House in Limerick, the old schoolhouse in Grange, and €25,000 for emergency works to the chimney systems of the Castle House in Newcastlewest.
Under the thatched roof scheme, €7,000 has been offered in grant funding, to a property in Knocklong and another at Curraghkilbran in Galbally.
TIPPERARY
In Clogheen, Glenleigh House has been granted €9,000 towards roof and rainwater disposal works, and another €8,000 for works at the former parochial house in Ballyporeen. Another €18,000 has been granted for thatched roof works at a property in Graigue in Clogheen; all of these have been approved under the BHIS.
WATERFORD
In Waterford, €50,000 has been granted under the HSF to Mount Melleray Abbey near Cappoquin for repairs to the walls of the public church, and repairs to the external gables of the main church.
Under the BHIS, €4,000 has been granted to St. Carthage’s Cathedral in Lismore for works to rainwater systems and external walls and another €4,000 for windows, to the ‘Annmount’ building on South Mall. Also in Lismore, the courthouse building has been granted €12,500 towards works to the windows and €8,000 for works at ‘Headview House, just outside of the town.
€8,000 has been granted for windows in the parochial house in Cappoquin, another €6,000 towards works to the walls and roof of a property in Dromana, and €8,000 for works to windows at Walsh’s Hotel in Cappoquin. In thatched works, €18,000 has been granted for the old forge in Scart.
Finally, €14,000 was granted for the external walls of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Tallow under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme.
