‘Big Maggie’ underway in Anglesboro
Anglesboro Drama Group continue their live performances of 'Big Maggie' by John B Keane which kicked off on Wednesday, March 20th - curtain up at 8pm nightly. The play continues this Thursday 21st, Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd and Sunday, March 24th.
Rehearsals have been ongoing since December 2023 and all cast and crew have committed fully to bringing a great production to stage. We have a large and diverse cast for 'Big Maggie' this year. This makes the production all the more enjoyable. A big thank you to all our actors on loan again for 2024.
It is a privilege to once again do a John
B Keane play. He is undoubtedly one of Ireland's cherished, albeit controversial writers. ‘Big Maggie’ is a dark and powerful exploration of a mother's desire for power and control over
her family. The dialogue crackles with hilarious, caustic putdowns as the indomitable Maggie deals with her feckless family and unwanted suitors.
Everyone wants a
part of Big Maggie and her property, but she has other ideas. On the day of her husband’s funeral, Maggie Polpin, played by Margaret Ann McGrath, widowed mother of four, is now ready to take power into her own hands, but at what cost?
We had a lot of fun sourcing props for the shop this year. It brought back memories of buying the vibrantly coloured boiled sweets at our local Anglesboro shop, Pad and Bridie Lane’s in the 60/70s. The shop still exists today and is run by Pad and Bridie's son Kevin and his wife Michelle. How wonderful is that, what a fabric of our community and a crucial meeting spot for all village residents.
We hope you can join us in Anglesboro this week for one of our five performances. All support is greatly appreciated. Advisory: strong language and sexual references within the play dialogue.
