TY Loreto, Fermoy delegation attend Model UN
“Honourable chair, fellow delegates, esteemed guests,” every speech last week in Loreto Clonmel’s Sports Hall opened with this phrase.
Last week, 5th year and TY students from Loreto, Fermoy attended Loreto, Clonmel Model United Nations (LCMUN) 2024. Model United Nations is a simulation of the UN where students represent different countries and are tasked with solving pressing world issues with other delegates through research and fruitful debate.
In attendance last week were Anaiah Fernandes as the Republic or Korea, Leona Buckley as Somalia, Abbie Barry as Bulgaria, Lucy Barry as Burundi, Alicia Jonca as Algeria, Maria Joia as Italy and Laura Moore as Mozambique in General Assembly discussing issues of decolonization of the remaining 17 colonial territories, internally displaced people, eco-terrorism, organ donation with regards to human trafficking and space colonisation, as well as Leah Nolan as Algeria and Sophie Lee as Mozambique in the Security Council, discussing issues of the privatisation of space exploration and media censorship.
Anaiah and Leah submitted resolutions at the conference and Anaiah’s resolution was chosen as the back-up resolution for the issue of the colonisation of space in the General Assembly and Leah’s resolution was chosen for the issue of media censorship in the Security Council.
In General Assembly, we passed quite a few fun amendments ranging from Cuba now being called Barbieland to King Julian from Madagascar being the king of the universe. We also agreed to watch the Lorax every Sunday at noon and let all internally displaced people rest in the Loreto Clonmel Sports Hall.
In Security Council a secret elite council to oversee the censorship of media was formed, which consisted of the head of states of each P5 nation (China, France, Russia, UK, USA) and the 5 chasers from The Chase to represent each P5. Fiji was turned into spacetopia and we tried to introduce a real life hunger games.
MUN helped us to learn about the workings of the United Nations and to develop leadership, research, debating and public speaking skills as well as presenting many opportunities to meet new people. MUN is an incredibly worthwhile experience that we will never forget.
