Hard fought win in Kiskeam

MCCARTHY INSURANCE FL DIV 2 RD 2 Fermoy 2-09 Kiskeam 0-10

Last Friday saw our Senior A team on the road once again as we had to fulfil a ‘home’ fixture over in Duhallow against our Senior A rivals, Kiskeam. The match was fixed for 8pm, so it was a bit of a trek but as it turned out, it was a very successful one.

We travelled with a mixture of youth and experience as we were looking for a bounce back from our defeat to Valley Rovers a couple of weeks ago. Played under floodlights and on a very soggy pitch, we were not disappointed as the Fermoy lads got stuck in, playing some very attractive football while performing some titanic and at times ferocious defending.

The game was only a minute old when the referee awarded a free kick against Liam in goals, as he cleared a ball in to their full forward on the volley out the field. They scored the resultant free kick to go in front. There was a lot of possession football after this and we did more than hold our own even though we made a few minor errors. The game sparked into life for us when we scored a goal on 6 minutes through Padraig de Róiste after a nice team move. They brought the match back to parity when scoring points on 8 and 11 minutes respectively. We got the next score when the hard working dynamo Brendan Daly shot over a point and then the elusive Padraig got his second goal of the game to put us into a four point lead in the 19th minute.

Killian Fitzpatrick succumbed to an injury in the 20th minute and was replaced by the returning Cian O’Carroll. We received a free kick on their right hand side about 30 metres out in the 22nd minute, and Cian stepped up to strike it off the ground and over the bar. No sooner had the kick out been secured by Fermoy and moved up the field where it got in to Cian’s hands about 35 metres out. He turned and without hesitation struck it over the bar to make it Fermoy 2-03 Kiskeam 0-03 after 23 minutes. Kiskeam replied with a point in the 24th minute but it was us who finished the half in style by scoring 3 points before the short whistle. Padraig, who was on fire, scored two points with one in the 25th minute and the other on the 30 minutes. We were not finished yet as Brendan popped up again to score a lovely point just on the whistle. This was an excellent half by the boys and we were hoping it would continue in the second half. Half-time: Fermoy 2-06, Kiskeam 0-04.

HARD FOUGHT VICTORY

If I am honest, the second half was a tough battle for us, but some unbelievable defending and good passing football led to us holding our own as they threw the kitchen sink at us. They scored the first point of the second half on 38 minutes but we cancelled that out with a brilliantly taken point, his third of the game, by Brendan off his left foot. They then had a run of three points on the trot in the next 8 minutes scoring on 44, 48 and 49 minutes respectively to make it a 5 point game. Another substitute Niall Cloney scored an invaluable point in the 50th minute to put us six up but again they did not lie down and attacked us with everything they had. They scored a point in the 52nd minute and again in the 58th minute to make it a four point game but we were the ones who had the last laugh when Padraig secured the win in the 61st minute with a well taken point.

Well done to everyone involved as this was an important victory to get us up and running. We are under pressure at the moment with a serious amount of injuries but I believe that the young players coming through will be of huge benefit to us. Our next outing is away again against Beal Athan Ghaorthaidh, Saturday, March 30th. Final score Fermoy 2-09 Kiskeam 0-10.
