Scoil Mhuire pupils become marine explorers
Fourth Class in Scoil Mhuire, Ballyhooly recently embarked on an enlightening educational journey when they visited the Lifetime Lab in Cork to partake in Explorers Marine Education Programme workshops. Scoil Mhuire is working towards their eighth Green Flag: Global Citizenship- Marine Environment.
These marine workshops served as a platform for pupils to delve into the fascinating realm of marine life inhabiting Irish waters. Through engaging activities, students gained insights into various marine animals and plants, expanding their understanding of the marine ecosystem.
At the heart of the programme are hands-on water experiments, designed to elucidate concepts such as water pressure and the formidable force of the sea. Pupils from Scoil Mhuire, enthusiastically participated in making a whirlpool and making an aquatic food web. They also saw some amazing sea creatures such as the spotted dogfish, which is a type of shark. Additionally, they were introduced to the Real Map of Ireland showing Ireland's expansive marine territory and abundant resources.
The Marine Institute spearheads the Explorers series of workshops, aimed at igniting children's curiosity and fostering a deeper appreciation for marine science. By immersing students in innovative educational experiences, the programme serves as a catalyst for raising awareness about marine ecosystems and their significance.
The Explorers Programme focuses on Ireland's two greatest resources – our young people and our vast marine territory. Inspiring students' interest in marine through the Explorers programme, teachers are able to easily include marine themed lessons based on the Irish curriculum already taught in national schools.
4th class will prepare a small project that will be showcased to the Explorers Education officer who will visit the school later in the year.
