Vote of sympathy passed as Tallow's 'volunteer to the core' remembered

- KATIE GLAVIN

A vote of sympathy was passed by Dungarvan Lismore District on Monday to the family of the late Gerty Murphy (nee Treacy), who passed away recently.

Gerty became known as an institution in Tallow despite being a native of Clonmel, as she took such a positive and active role in various committees and organisations in her community and was focused on developing the locality.

Proposing a vote of sympathy at Monday’s meeting, Cllr John Pratt described Gerty as ‘an unbelievable person’.

“She was a volunteer to the core. She found time for every single person and was loved by everyone. A person like her only comes around once in a lifetime,” Cllr Pratt said.

AN 'AMAZING PERSON'

Tallow Tidy Towns, point-topoints, Lismore Golf Club and various other committees and boards were among some of the local endeavours that Gerty was involved with. Remembering Gerty, many recalled her positive outlook and approach, her community activism and her passion and drive.

Cllr Damien Geoghegan added his sympathies to Gerty's family, as did Cllr Conor McGuinness, who had both known Gerty through different initiatives and committees.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Declan Doocey said that he too had served alongside Gerty on committees.

“I’ve served on numerous committees with her and stood alongside her stewarding and different things. What a lady, what a lore. She had some personality and my goodness she is some loss,” Cllr Doocey said.

Chairperson of the Dungarvan Lismore District, Pat Nugent, said that Gerty was a ‘positive woman in every sense’.

“What was said about her by all the councillors today was only half said, in the sense that she was so good. She was an amazing person,” he concluded.
