Successful weekend for Fermoy cyclists

-

It was a busy weekend for Fermoy cyclists with both youth road racing and mtb racing taking place last weekend.

Our youth road racers headed for Bellewstown Racecourse in Co Meath for the renowned Rás na nÓg youth race organised by Drogheda Wheelers. It was a tough weekend for racing with extremely strong winds making it a very tough race.

Mia Geary topped the list in the U16 girls race, with three stage wins and the overall title also. This was Mia’s first stage race and she loved the experience.

Shane O’Brien competed in the U16 boys category and was in the thick of the action in the first two stages and finished strongly in the bunch, however, he was unlucky to be caught in a crash on the final stage and had to retire, get well soon Shane, I’m sure we’ll see you back racing in the next couple of weeks.

James Geary was in action in the U14 boys category and it was also James’s first ever road race. He raced his heart out all weekend and was in contention in every stage. It was great experience for James and he is sure to progress with each race.

Also in action at the Biking Blitz in Coolaney, Co Sligo were Paudi Ryan and Tom Cotter, and Tom’s son Lex also made his mtb debut. Paudi proved his podium finishes in the last few weeks were no fluke and he was delighted to take the top step of the podium in his category, well done Paudi.

Tom Cotter also had a great day on the technical circuit and he claimed a strong top 10 finish with Lex, impressing on his debut and finishing strongly, well done.

Our racers will continue to train with the next road race action in Kerry in 2 weeks’ time and the next Biking Blitz is a double header 2 day event in Co Laois on the same weekend.
