CAVANAGHS OF FERMOY DIV 1 HURLING LEAGUE Ballyhooly 1-17 (20) Dromina 3-14 (23)

As the beginnings of Storm Kathleen made her way towards us last Friday evening Ballyhooly played Dromina in the third game of the Division 1 Hurling League. Conditions were tough both underfoot and overhead but the teams put on as good performance as they could. Dromina opened the scoring with a point from play but Ballyhooly had the scoreboard in action just as fast with a cracking point from a sideline by Brian Lombard. He followed this with points from a 65’ and a free. These were in addition to points from play by Dylan Collins and Fionn Hess so that after nearly ten minutes Ballyhooly were ahead 0-5 to Dromina’s 0-2. Unfortunately, this lead was short-lived when Dromina got their first goal to put the sides level at Ballyhooly 0-5 Dromina 1-2.

Dromina added two more points as two of Ballyhooly’s efforts went wide before Brian Lombard put over another sideline for a point after a quarter of an hour. A point each from frees for both sides had the sides level again at twenty minutes, Ballyhooly 0-7 Dromina 1-4. An exchange of points kept the sides even until Dromina goaled again on the twenty-eighth minute. Before the break Eoin Twomey and Seamus Roche pulled back a point each to leave the sides Ballyhooly 0-11 Dromina 2-7 (13) at half-time.

As the second half began conditions seemed to worsen with the rain getting heavier. Dromina again opened the scoring and extended their lead to three points. Three points from Brian Lombard frees and one from play had the sides level again after ten minutes, Ballyhooly 0-15 Dromina 2-9 (15). Dromina managed to create more scoring opportunities for the remainder of the game; they scored a further 1-5 but Brian Lombard managed to keep Ballyhooly to between three and four points of them with points from frees and 65s for a long time. The gap eventually reached six points, Ballyhooly 0-17 Dromina 3-14 (23) and with only minutes left to play Ballyhooly had too much to do to pull it back. As the extra time allowed played out Brian finally rattled the goal from a free and brought Ballyhooly a little bit closer. Final score Ballyhooly 1-17 (20) Dromina 3-14 (23).

A tough game played in very hard conditions with the edge going just slightly to Dromina on this occasion.
