8 members in nationals
Having qualified from the provincials 7 club athletes made the trek to the International Arena in Athlone last weekend.
On Saturday, Jack O’Rourke made his national debut with a strong performance in the U14 1km walk. More to come from him in the outdoors. Merveille Kumanzembe finished a credible 3rd in the U13 60m heat, narrowly missing the final in 8.62 secs. A great debut for Merveille. Eoin Toland ran a super 8.36 seconds in the boys U15 60m heat just missing a final slot. Thomas Burke also made his debut at national in the U12 long jump with 3.55m a few centimetres away from a place in the final.
Molly Thornton in the U13 girls shot put on this occasion, made it to the final where a PB of 9.20m saw her finish 6th a few centimetres off the medals. Fintan O’Grady narrowly missed out on a final slot in the U16 boys shot put with a super throw of 10.92m. Micheal Quirke, no stranger to nationals, progressed through the U14 boys 60m hurdles heats and was agonisingly close to a bronze with a super run 4th place finish in the final.
Kotryna Pacerinskaite starred at Irish University Championships in Belfast with the UL team. New record 9.50cm in weight for distance (20lb) Big PB in shot putt 12.95cm (4kg). hammer 48.21cm (4kg).
Congratulations to the 8 athletes at the nationals. They should be super proud of their performances. We now move swiftly on to the outdoor track and field starting with the Avondhu and County Championships for throws next Sunday all at Castleisland track. Keep an eye for updates for upcoming events.
AVONDHU CHAMPIONSHIPS
Note the Avondhu Championships at Castleisland are on Sunday, April 14 at 11am plus Cork Juvenile Championships throwing events starting 9am. €5 to enter. This divisional championships open to all club members and especially newcomers. Bí ann.
