Hurlers kick-off campaign with a win

-

DIVISION ONE HURLING LEAGUE Harbour Rovers 1-30 Mallow 4-12

Last week our Junior hurlers travelled to Mallow to open up their division one account for 2024. It was a ding-dong battle that was ultimately decided by our very strong last ten minutes. We were the better side and were well merited for the win.

We started well and were looking very sharp leading five points to two after ten minutes with our scores coming from Podge Hannon (3), Peter Condon and John O’Sullivan. We made it a four point lead when Mikey Wade struck a great point. They responded with a point but we went right up the field and Podge found the target again. Then they came right back into the game when they took full advantage of a lapse of concentration in our backline to score a goal. We came right back with a point from Podge which they responded to.

We were getting a lot of the ball though and kept attacking. We got three points on the bounce through Aaron Noonan, Peter Condon and Emmett Sheehan. After twenty minutes the gap was three with they got a point. A minute later we were level somehow when they took a quick free and it deflected into the net. We came right back with points from Emmett Sheehan and Mikey Wade. We then lost John O’Sullivan to an injury and Diarmuid O’Brien came on to make his debut and did an excellent job. They reduced the gap to one with a point, we replied with another Peter Condon beauty of a point.

We were level going into injury time though as they got two on the bounce. We finished strongly with a great point from Mikey Wade and one of the scores of the day to end the half. Sean Finn went on a run and hit a bullet into the roof of the net. This left it at half-time 1-15 to 2-8. We were playing well but two sloppy goals kept them in touch.

They started the second half well with three points in a row in the first five minutes. We got a point from Podge but Mallow were leading on forty minutes and they counter-attacked and struck their 3rd goal. Once again our response was immediate. Diarmuid O’Brien and Emmett Sheehan got a point within a minute. They levelled it again but we were getting going and had points from Podge (3) and Peter to go four ahead with fifteen to go. It looked as if we were finally going to put them away but another counter-attack put us in trouble and they hit their fourth goal.

I thought this might get them going again but it actually was us who took complete control and they wouldn’t score again. We got on a run and couldn’t stop scoring. We had scores from Podge (3), Pa Roche (2), Mikey Wade, Diarmuid O’Brien, Colm Whelton and Peter Condon to close out the game in style. There were ups and downs but it is always good to start with a win. The lads were due to play again last Sunday but the weather had other ideas.
