Sun shines for Glanworth spring clean

-

Despite the weather in the lead up to the event, the sun did shine last Saturday and the people of Glanworth showed up for what was a successful community-led spring clean event.

This is the second year that Glanworth as a community participated in the An Taisce National Spring Clean which is all about organising a local litter clean up the environment during the month of April. In 2024 once again this was facilitated by the Glanworth TidyTowns group, but the success of the day would not have been achieved without the support from all residents both in the village and wider parish area as well as the collective support from all the local community groups.

For many, in the month leading up to our Spring Clean and also on the day, local litter picks were organised. The local TidyTowns Group, organisers of the event, are grateful for the extra volunteers on the day as well as some of the players group from the GAA who undertook litter picks at all of the village entrances.

The village itself was also a hive of activity with residents from each of the residential areas undertaking local clean ups. The community development group did their bit at the playground and astro pitch area and residents in the village helped in power washing and cleaning outside their homes. This event was well supported and we wish to acknowledge and thank Breedon Ltd, who sponsored a street sweep on the day.

The result is the village is now looking squeaky clean and some planting is in place around the church in advance of Confirmation, which took place on Wednesday of this week and Holy Communion which is due to take place on April 20. The TidyTown group wish all those involved a memorable and hopefully sunshine-filled day.

The day was a huge success and central to that was the participation of so many. As well as hard work, great fun was had, with many also having the well-deserved cup of tea or coffee post event, which was also delivered in person for some of the workers locally at the bridge and Glanworth Mill area.

The spring clean day continued to Sunday, April 14 when the local LGFA incorporated a litter pick into their annual sponsored walk and ongoing activities are planned on litter awareness in the coming months with two of our An Gaisce volunteers planning litter awareness campaigns in the local Montessori schools and St Patrick's Primary School as well as a collaboration between Glanworth TidyTowns, Community Council and the Glanworth residents to participate in the Cork County Council litter challenge in May and June. Once again a thank you to all that supported the day and each person's contribution to the success of the event.
