Raised tables planned for Ballynoe village

- KATIE GLAVIN

Three raised tables are to be installed across Ballynoe village in line with resurfacing planned under the 2025 Roads Improvement programme.

News of this comes in response to a motion tabled at this week's Fermoy Municipal District meeting by Cllr Noel McCarthy, seeking an engineer's report on the possibility of ramps being installed in the village.

Cllr McCarthy stated that ‘there is a problem with speed in the village’ and said that raised tables in the area are ‘a good idea'.

“I welcome the answer, hopefully, the people of Ballynoe will have the answer that they want. It is a need,” he said.

Having met with people in the area in recent times, Cllr McCarthy said that the point was made to him regarding the traffic calming in place in Conna and Curraglass and while Ballynoe is not far from these locations, there is little in place.

Cllr William O’Leary supported the motion, stating that traffic calming for Ballynoe is something that is raised ‘time and time again’.

The motion was also supported by Cllr Frank Roche, who admitted he was ‘worried’ upon first seeing the motion as in the past, people had objected to installing speed ramps.

“The raised tables are definitely the answer. Ramps are lethal on trucks and airbags. Raised tables are definitely the way to go,” the Castletownroche councillor said.

Pointing to Conna and Curraglass, Cllr Roche noted that agricultural contractors and those with machinery are travelling over speed ramps at 5kmph, however are still experiencing a ‘bang’ coming off the ramp as he described it as similar to ‘driving off a footpath’.
