New MA in Irish Traditional Music launched

-

The Department of Music at University College Cork recently launched a new MA in Irish Traditional Music. The programme draws on wide-ranging internationally-recognised expertise to offer a progressively flexible postgraduate pathway in Irish traditional music.

At the recent launch in the Aula Maxima in UCC, many fine performances were evident from the Traditional Music Society and students from the Music Department. It was noteworthy that the star of the night was the wonderful Bobby Gardiner, who taught accordion in UCC for forty years and was recently awarded an honorary MA in Music in recognition of his unique contribution as a music teacher. The programme co-ordinator, Dr. Jack Talty, is just one of his past pupils.

For many decades studying music at second level and subsequently completing a degree in music, meant that the primary focus was on the classical composers, and Irish music was not given the recognition it merited. Many previous music graduates may consider this route to further their education. By taking this MA in Irish Traditional Music, students, young and old, will develop a range of essential skills to contribute meaningfully to their own artistic development as well as contributing to local, national and international communities of practice who are passionate about Irish traditional music.
