Footballers brave effort falls short

DIVISION FOUR FOOTBALL LEAGUE Glanworth 0-9 St Vincents 2-6

Last Sunday our Intermediate footballers fell to defeat by St Vincents in a very close encounter. The term ‘goals wins game’ was never more apt. It was two very evenly matched teams but then goals proved the difference. I thought it was a much improved performance from our lads and our defence in particular I thought was excellent. Hopefully, this will be the start of the upward curve.

We got off to the worst possible start when with their first attack the ball landed in the square and they punched it to the net. We responded well and had two points from Emmett to reduce the gap to one. They kicked a free a minute later and then in the eighteenth minute another ball landed in our square and they were more alert and punched into the net for a second time. There was only one more score in the half, coming from the boot of Emmett, to leave it at the break 0-3 to 2-1. Defence on both sides was well on top with very few opportunities being created such was the pressure being applied and such scores were at a premium. If we were going to win this we needed to up our tempo and get at them.

They got the first score with a free and we replied in kind through Emmett. They scored from play and we replied with two lovely points from Aaron Noonan. On forty minutes the gap was four again when they struck from play. The next few minutes were tight but we got the scoreboard going again when John O’Sullivan kicked a wonderful point. Two minutes later the gap was two when Emmett kicked another free. The game looked to be in the balance but we couldn’t kick on. They responded with two points in a row to go four up with a few minutes to go. We got another point from John O’Sullivan to finish the scoring. But as hard as we tried we couldn’t find a goal to get a draw. This was much better from the lads and there are a lot of positives to take from it. Hard luck to all.

Team: Shay Coleman, Peter Condon, Jamie Fogarty, Harvey McGrath, Colm Whelton, Jerome Fitzgibbon, Tom McGrath, Marc Moloney, Sean Finn, Emmett Sheehan, Podge Hannon, Aaron Noonan, Scott Sheehan, John O’Sullivan and Ger O’Neill. Subs: Mikey Wade and Ian O’Dwyer.

DIVISION TWO FOOTBALL LEAGUE Mallow 3-13 Glanworth 1-10

In the first of their two outings last week the Junior footballers travelled to Mallow last Thursday and after a very spirited display lost out to the home side. We had the aid of the breeze in the first half and we got off to a great start going three points clear after ten minutes. They got their first point but we replied with the next attack with a point from Aaron Noonan. They started coming into the game and kicked 1-2 in a row to lead by two after twenty minutes. Aaron Noonan kicked a lovely point but they would finish the scoring with two more points to leave three in it at the break.

They started the second half strongly with three points in the first seven minutes. We responded with a nice Scott Sheehan score but they came with another three on the bounce. Emmett Sheehan kicked a point but Mallow responded with their second goal to go ten points ahead. We didn’t give up and responded straight away with a point from Tom McGrath. They kicked a free but we responded from a close in free that Emmett Sheehan went for and he shattered the roof of the net. We kicked on with points from Diarmuid O’Brien and Mikey Wade to reduce the gap to five with a few minutes remain

ing. Any thoughts of a comeback were ended when they got their third goal. They would finish the scoring with another point. It was a disappointing loss but I thought we played well at times. We got some great scores and worked really well. On the other end Shay Coleman pulled off two great saves to keep us in it. There were plenty of positives to take from this.

Team: Shay Coleman, John Landers, Bart O’Keeffe, Colm Clancy, Colm Whelton, Philip Blackburne, Marc Moloney, Ross Murphy, Diarmuid O’Brien, Emmett Sheehan, Aaron Noonan, Tom McGrath, Harvey McGrath, Mikey Wade and Scott Sheehan. Sub: Ian O’Dwyer.

Glanworth 0-9 Shanballymore 2-14

Last Saturday we simply weren’t good enough for the challenge of Shanballymore. Credit to them, they showed up but we were never in this game. After eleven minutes we were four points to nothing down and struggling. We got our first point from Emmett Sheehan and followed up with a point from Mikey Wade. Just when it looked like we were coming into the game we went completely out of it and they scored 1-5 in a row to take complete control of this match. We finally managed to stem the tide with points from Emmett Sheehan and Aaron Noonan. They got a point but we finished the scoring for the half with a point from Emmett Sheehan.

The start of the second half had to be better and we did get the first point of the half from Emmett Sheehan but they went up the field and got their second goal. Our heads seem to drop a bit and they kicked two points in the next ten minutes. Our next point came from Aaron Noonan but the next few minutes were tight and we were struggling to add to our score. They kicked a point and we responded with a great point from Marc Moloney. They kicked another point and we finished the scoring with Aaron Noonan. The effort from the lads can’t be faulted but we weren’t as sharp as Thursday. Hard luck boys. There will be better days ahead.

Team: Shay Coleman, Darren O’Driscoll, Ciaran Cotter, Colm Clancy, Colm Whelton, Philip Blackburne, Scott Sheehan, Marc Moloney, Diarmuid O’Brien, Emmett Sheehan, Aaron Noonan, Ricky O’Donoghue, Ian O’Dwyer, Mikey Wade, John Gallagher.
