THROWBACK THURSDAY

Pictured is the victorious Kilworth U21 A North Cork Football Championship winning team of 1996. With Liam Kenny at the helm as coach and duly assisted by Tom Twomey and Ciaran Hynes, the team succeeded in capturing the club’s historic first and only title at this grade to date. Dubbed locally as the 13 days of spring, the competition was played off over 3 successive weekends in April which saw Kilworth complete the hat-trick of successes over the 3 towns within the division, Fermoy, Mallow and finally Mitchelstown.

Kilworth’s title challenge began with a quarter-final clash against near neighbours Fermoy played at Ballyhooly on Saturday, 6th April. After a shaky start and with 20 minutes of play on the clock the opposition led by 1-04 to 0-01. Kilworth however, dug deep and even after having a penalty saved, fought back to reduce Fermoy’s lead to just 3 points at the interval, 1-04 to 0-04. Fermoy’s second goal came just after the restart and one can only imagine the Kilworth mentors’ instructions that were issued from the sideline at this stage, but it was Kilworth who improved considerably and had the game tied after 53 minutes before drawing ahead with the final 3 kicks to run out victors on a final scoreline of 0-15 to 2-06.

The following Saturday, 13th April, Kilworth travelled to Castletownroche to face off against red hot favourites Mallow, who were the holders of the previous year’s U21 A Divisional and County Championship titles. Kilworth were first to raise the white flag in this semi-final encounter and at the end of the first quarter held a 2-point lead. Playing the better football and very strong down the centre Kilworth led at the half time break by 2 points, 0-05 to 0-03. Mallow did dominate for a brief period after the interval but the constant pressure from the Kilworth backs meant they were forced into a lot of erratic shooting from distance. However, a converted penalty for Kilworth just before the final whistle sounded sealed the win with Kilworth, reaching the final for the first time in their history at this grade.

At Fermoy 6 days later on Friday, 19th April, Kilworth took to the field against a very well fancied Mitchelstown side, who were slight favourites to take the title after their 11-point semi-final victory against Killavullen the previous week. Kilworth, once again as underdogs stayed focused on the mammoth task in hand and raced to an early 0-04 lead but Mitchelstown rallied back and were just 1 point adrift at the half hour mark, 0-04 to 0-03. Kilworth hit the ground running straight after the restart by recording 2 quick points followed by the green flag being raised in their favour on the 37-minute mark. Kilworth, donning the white coloured jerseys due to a colour clash, then really started to dominate proceedings for the remainder of the hour with Mitchelstown only able to kick one more score coming from a free only for Kilworth to quickly cancel this out with another point before Buttevant referee Sean Mulchinock blew the full-time whistle.

In what was regarded as one of the finest displays of football ever produced by a Kilworth football team they recorded a victory on a final scoreline of 1-08 to 0-04. The sound of the final whistle saw great scenes of jubilation with captain, Donal Kenneally, receiving the JB Roche Memorial Cup much to the delight of the Kilworth following.
