Town go under to league leaders

-

Mitchelstown 2-09 Buttevant 2-08

Mitchelstown footballers went under to league leaders Buttevant by the narrowest of margins at a windswept Buttevant on Sunday last in Division 5 of the McCarthy Insurances Cork Football League. Town were playing with the strong breeze in the first half but it was the Buttevant team who opened the scoring with a point from play. Mitchelstown were quick to answer with two points but a Buttevant goal against the breeze after ten minutes made things hard for the men in red and black. Mitchelstown dominated for the remainder of the half adding 1-06 to a solitary point to leave the halftime score 1-08 to 1-03.

The second half had Buttevant raise two white flags, but a Mitchelstown goal kept them in control. The home side added 1-02 which town replied to with a white flag, ironically the only one of the second half to lead by one with five minutes remaining, but it was Buttevant who finished the stronger and two points from play by their full forward saw them win out by the narrowest of margins.

With three matches played we are third from bottom and will need to get some wins to avoid relegation two years in a row.

Mitchelstown were due to play Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels in the division three football league but word came through on Friday night that we had received a walkover which now leaves us joint top of the table with neighbours Kildorrery with a game in hand.
