Last week saw the welcome return of the Club Championships for the first time in over 20 years. The fantastic week brought the whole club together with a huge entry of almost 80 members, the week-long tournament catered for our members on all levels - advanced, intermediate and beginners.
The standard of play throughout the week was exceptional. Closely fought competitive matches every evening creating great excitement and a wonderful atmosphere for the many supporters, with finals for all categories last Friday evening. It was a tremendous evening for the crowd gathered to see the fantastic finals determining the club champions at all levels. The cheers and gasps were heard from afar.
The grade 3/4 final saw our captain, Liam O’Grady and Marie O’Neill v vice-captain, Ray Hurley and Catherine Baker. A lengthy battle that came down to the championship tie break. Liam and Marie coming out on top.
The grade 5 final saw Nollaig Baker and Ciaran Cotter v Sean Keane and Thomas Finn, another great battle with great tennis. Nollaig and Ciaran victorious in straight sets.
The grade 6 final saw Tim Hodkinson and Margaret Healy v Joanna Davern and Daniel Keane, another nail-biting final going to a tie break, with Daniel and Joanna taking the title.
Finally the showstopper grade 1/2 final saw Catherine Rea and Mark Moloney v Scott Kent and Ciaran O’Kennedy, a wonderful display of the highest level tennis with Mark and Catherine coming out as club champions and concluding an absolutely brilliant week.
