Premier Juniors win v Ballydesmond

-

Glenville 3-6 (15) Ballydesmond 1-7 (10)

Glenville hosted Ballydesmond in the Premier Junior League on Saturday and saw Glenville secure a strong 5-point win over the fancied Ballydesmond team.

Glenville got the dream start with a goal by Ciaran O’Riordan in the second minute, quickly followed by points from Ciaran O’Leary and Josh Cooke.

Former Cork footballer, Donncha O’Connor, showed he still had it by scoring two points for Ballydesmond before Ciaran O’Leary got his second point. Donncha O’Connor again pointed for Ballydesmond before Colin O’Keeffe scored a well worked goal to extend Glenville’s lead to six points. Ballydesmond responded with a point before Tom Dinan finished the first half with a third goal, giving Glenville the advantage at half-time on a scoreline of 3-3 to 0-4.

Ballydesmond regrouped for the second half and tightened their defence, stopping Glenville attacks. Colin O’Keeffe scored a point from a free in the 38th minute before Ballydesmond racked up 1-3 without reply (Donncha O’Connor adding to his total by scoring a goal from a penalty and a point from a free).

Glenville settled in the last quarter and found their structure and defended strongly to stop Ballydesmond from scoring for the rest of the game and the two remaining scores in the game came from the in-form Ciaran O’Leary converting two frees over the bar.

The Glenville Junior B team made the short journey to Carrignavar on Sunday to play an intensely fought league match against their neighbours and came away with a hard won twopoint victory from a team with a great mix of highly experienced players and young minor/U21s who brought speed, energy and running to the Glenville mix.

There was an incredible wind throughout the game and Glenville had this advantage in the first half.

Denis Buttimer opened the Glenville account with a point in the first minute from his half forward position. Ciarán O’Riordan added a point from a free and Donnacha Forde added a third point for Glenville all in the first five minutes, before Carrig responded with two points. The second quarter saw Glenville push hard, taking advantage of the wind and Michael Murphy scored a superb goal in the 19th minute which turned out to be the match decider. Callum O’Mahony and Ciaran O’Riordan added two more points for Glenville to give Glenville the lead at half-time on a scoreline of 1-5 to 0-2.

Carrignavar made significant changes to their lineout at half-time, introducing fresh younger players to bring the game to Glenville and using the very strong wind, made attack after attack on the Glenville goal. Glenville strengthened their defence bringing Ciaran Linehan back as a sweeper and the structured Glenville defence rebuffed the Carrig attacks, only conceding two points over the first 29 minutes of the second half. With the game in the 30th minute of normal time, Carrig converted a free from a point, bringing it to a three-point game. Carrig won the resulting kickout and swiftly secured another point, bring it to a two-point game in added time. Carrig attacked and took several shots at goal knowing a goal would win the game. Glenville produced some incredible defending with 15 men behind the ball and some great clearances off the goal line before Carrig kicked the ball wide and the referee blew the final whistle in the 64th minute, giving Glenville a two-point win.

It was a hard-fought win with Glenville remaining scoreless in the second half but producing their best defending performance in years to see off Carrignavar.

U14 Glenville 1-9 (12) Bride Rovers 2-03 (9)

Last Friday, we saw our U14 footballers maintain their unbeaten streak in the Rebel Óg division 1 football league with a hard-fought victory over near neighbours Bride Rovers.

We started off strong and some good scores from Matthew Counihan, Darren Cahill, and Patrick O'Sullivan had us 06-02 ahead after 15 minutes. Our lads moved the ball well, and we were awarded a penalty that was converted. At halftime, we led by seven.

We knew that Bride Rovers were going to come out strong as they put it up to our lads but great determination and team spirit especially in the final stages of the game saw us over the line.

The attention now turns to championship season for the next few weeks with our first game against Douglas fixed for the 26th at home at 7.

U13S

Our U13s welcomed Douglas to Glenville on Sunday and with unexpected generosity enhanced the welcome by giving Douglas a three goal start, the rhythm of the game settled down after that with Glenville improving as the game went on with some fine passages of play and though the result was never in doubt, there were some fine performance across the team which gives optimism for the next round

U12

Our U12s were in action on Saturday in their first league match of the season against Kiltha Óg. It was a tough, competitive encounter. Playing into a strong breeze in the first half, we had some excellent teamwork and scores to lead at half time. With a panel of 21 and everyone getting equal game time, all our lads stuck to their task to emerge victorious on a scoreline of 5-6 to 2-5. Well done to our lads on their great effort.

Scorers: C Harrington 2-1; P Moynihan, N O'Neill 1-1 each; C Lee 1-0; R Cahill, B Wain, F Bowe, M McCormack 0-1 each.
