Mallow defeat Glanworth in Div 2 FL

- PADDY RYAN

Mallow 3-13 Glanworth 1-10

Mallow got their Cavanagh's of Fermoy Div 2 FL up and running on Thursday evening when they defeated a gallant Glanworth at Mallow. The opening stages saw Glanworth play with the aid of the wind and they were quick to stamp their authority on proceedings with Philip Blackburne, Ross Murphy, Diarmuid O'Brien, Aaron Noonan and Emmett Sheehan impressing from the offset. Diarmuid O'Brien (2) and Emmett Sheehan had points before Marc Moloney, Philip Blackburne and Emmett Sheehan worked well to set up Aaron Noonan for a fine point in the 12th minute that moved Glanworth 0-4 to 0-1 in front.

Moments later they missed the games first goal scoring opportunity when the Mallow keeper Josh Murphy denied the inrushing Diarmuid O'Brien at the expense of a '45. A youthful Mallow outfit improved greatly as they began to win a fair share of breaks in key areas of the field. Jamie O'Keeffe and Kevin Taylor had rapid points before great work by Jack Roche in the 20th minute set up Jamie O'Keeffe to score the game’s opening goal 1-3 to 0-4. Glanworth followed when a good pass by Scott Sheehan set up Aaron Noonan for a fine point. However, at this stage Mallow were exerting most of the pressure. In the 27th minute a delivery by Kevin Fitzpatrick was picked up by Kevin O'Connell who set up Ronan O'Sullivan for a point. In stoppage time Jamie O'Keeffe added a point from a free as the home side held a 1-5 to 0-5 cushion at the interval.

On the changeover Mallow aided by the wind started in a very positive manner. Kevin Taylor, Jamie O'Keeffe and Padraig Britton reeled off points as they increased their advantage to six points by the 40th minute. In Mallow's next attack the Glanworth keeper Shay Coleman certainly came to his sides rescue when he denied Jamie O'Keeffe when making a great save off his goal line. Still it was Mallow that were finding scores much easier to come by. Jamie O'Keeffe, Kevin Taylor and Ronan O'Sullivan with some fine points stretched their lead before they struck for a second goal in the 50th minute when Kevin O'Connell's delivery deceived everyone in a crowded goal mouth with the ball making its way to the net that raced them 2-11 to 0-7 clear. Glanworth refused to yield and staged a good revival in the closing stages. Tom

McGrath, Diarmuid O'Brien and Michael Wade had points before Emmett Sheehan with a goal from a free closed the gap to 2-12 to 1-10 by the 58th minute. Any hopes of Glanworth closing the deficit further were dashed two minutes later when Kevin Taylor and Kevin O'Connell combined well to set up Jamie O'Keeffe who netted. This was followed by a point from substitute Ronan Casey in injury time as Mallow who had some fine displays by Ethan Crone, Padraig Britton, Jack Roche, Kevin Fitzpatrick, Ronan O'Sullivan, Kevin O'Connell, Jamie O'Keeffe and Kevin Taylor emerged deserving winners.
