League win for junior As

-

Last Thursday the junior A football league began for Gaels with a game away to Galbally.

In cold and blustery conditions Gaels had a free converted inside 5 minutes from the boot of Eamon Kelly. Galbally converted their own free before the towering Brendan Childs found the net in the tenth minute for a cracker of a goal. Gaels were moving the ball well through the lines with Brendan Childs dominating at midfield. Both teams exchanged points with Gaels’ score coming from a free, which was well converted by Eamon Kelly. Indeed Gaels were unlucky not to have a second goal at this point when a goal chance just missed the post, but it was quickly followed up by a point from the industrious Paddy English.

Galbally upped their game for the remainder of the first half and scored four unanswered points to leave the score at the break Gaels 1-3 Galbally 0-7.

Gaels started the second half well with two points from Paddy English, one from a free and a point from Jack Ryan all within the first ten minutes of the restart. Galbally scored a free before Gaels introduced fresh legs in the form of Andy Breedy for Derek Gallahue, Cormac Roche for Padraig Byrne and Liam Boland for Kealan Hogan.

Fitness was starting to show and Gaels were dominating all over the field. A long ball from Brendan Childs in the seventeenth minute found defender Tommie O’Dwyer, who landed just in time to send it to the back of the net. Paddy English scored another lovely point from play before Thomas Moriarty was introduced for Patrick O’Callaghan. Galbally to their credit were working hard and scored three more points but a final score from a free converted by Eamon Kelly put the result in no doubt and Gaels ended with a well-deserved win on a scoreline of Gaels 2-8 Galbally 0-11.

This was a fine performance from Gaels and a great start to the league.
