MCCARTHY INSURANCE SENIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 ROUND 4 Fermoy 1-11 Clyda Rovers 0-11

We took on fellow Avondhu rivals, Clyda Rovers, on Sunday morning last in a sun-baked Fitzgerald Park venue. I was only able to see the first-half of the game as I had to leave at half-time, but team coach Ger Gibbons, kindly forwarded on the second half stats to me.

The first-half was a tight affair with plenty of hard but fair tackling and plenty of mistakes from both teams. The first 8 minutes were pretty mundane, with both teams tackling hard and making plenty of mistakes as both defences were on top. Clyda eventually got the scoreboard rolling with the first point of the game in the 8th minute and they followed this up with their second point from a free in the 10th minute.

Fermoy woke from their slumber in the 12th minute when the lively Padraig de Róiste pounced onto a pass from out the field to race in and place the ball into the net for a delightful goal. He followed this up in the 14th minute with a point from play but they scored a free in the 18th minute to bring it back to the minimum. They equalised in the 23rd minute with a point from play but a well taken point by Adam Creed after some neat interplay by

Fermoy put us ahead again.

Padraig knocked over his second point of the game from a free on 27 minutes but Clyda struck back with two frees of their own in the 30th and 31st minutes to level the game. Fermoy had the last say of the half, as cornerback Ross O’Sullivan made a great run and solo to boot the ball between the posts in the 32nd minute to put us ahead again. On the kick out the half-time whistle was blown, Fermoy 1-04 Clyda Rovers 0-06.

FULL VALUE FOR THE WIN

I don’t have details of how the second half unfolded, so I will give the scores for Fermoy. The sequence was Dale Dawson, Padraig, substitute David Lardner (0-02f), Arlen Aherne, Padraig and finally Arlen who finished the scoring. It is my understanding that we were full value for our win, which leaves us with 2 wins and 2 losses from our 4 matches so far. As was highlighted on previous reports this is a work in progress and hopefully we will now stay on a solid trajectory for the remainder of our fixtures.

Well done to all involved and we look forward to our next outing where we play O’Donovan Rossa in a rearranged fixture on Tuesday, May 7th in Fermoy. Final score: Fermoy 1-11 Clyda Rovers 0-11.

CAVANAGHS OF FERMOY FL DIVISION 1 ROUND 2 Fermoy 2-11 Kilshannig 2-11

This game was a rearranged fixture from a couple of weeks back and was played under lights in Fermoy. We had a very chastening experience in our first game and it was hoped that a huge improvement would be seen in this game. There were a few changes in personnel from the first game with plenty of experience available.

Fermoy got off to a blistering start with points from Arlen Aherne on 1 minute, a free from Cian O’Carroll on 3 minutes and another point from play by Cian to race in to a 3 point lead. They opened their account with a point on 6 minutes and another straight away as from the kick out the ball went directly to a Kilshannig forward, who gratefully slotted it over the bar. We settled again and got back on top for a period of time. We scored two excellent points from Arlen on 7 minutes and Brendan Daly on 10 minutes to go three points ahead. They scored their third point in the 11th minute but Arlen restored our 3 point lead with his second point on 13 minutes.

NICE FOOTBALL

Kilshannig scored the next two points from frees on 15 and 20 minutes respectively to make it a one point game but again Fermoy responded through a well taken Ronan O’Callaghan point on 21 minutes. Fermoy got a major boost in the 22nd minute, with a well taken goal by Cian, to make the score Fermoy 1-07 Kilshannig 0-05. We were playing some nice football at this stage and the omens were good. Kilshannig replied to our goal with a point in the 23rd minute but sub Ben Twomey got a crucial score for us on 27 minutes to keep us 5 points ahead. They had the final point of the half in the 28th minute to leave us ahead by four points at the short whistle. We were playing very well and it was hoped that the second half would be more of the same. Fermoy 1-08 Kilshannig 0-07.

Kilshannig arrived out for the second half like a team on a mission and tore into us from the start. They scored two points without reply in the first six minutes to narrow our lead to 2 points. We kept our cool and in the 41st minute, Cian converted a free to leave a goal between both antagonists. Kilshannig pointed from play on 44 minutes, but a Ronan point on 49 minutes cancelled this out. It was then that the game took a turn as Kilshannig went for the jugular. A long range point in the 49th minute brought our lead back to two points before they scored a goal on 51 minutes to go ahead by a point. Things went from bad to worse as they rattled in goal number two in the 52nd minute to take control of proceedings and from a Fermoy point of view it looked like the writing was on the wall. The score now read Fermoy 1-10 Kilshannig 2-11 with 6 minutes on the clock.

FAIR RESULT

A superb Sean Power score from a difficult 45 made it a one score game and it was now all hands to the pump. We got our reward in the 57th minute after some sustained pressure on the Kilshannig defence resulted in Arlen being in the right place to grab the required goal we needed. A draw! The remaining minutes were hectic as both teams vied for the winning score but it was not to be and the referee blew the final whistle leaving both sides deadlocked. A draw was about the fairest result with both sides having their moments of dominance throughout the game. This was a gallant display by the Fermoy lads and a huge improvement which will hopefully instil much needed confidence going forward. Well done to all involved and on to the next one.
