Under 20 hurling this weekend, Rebels looking good to date

- BY PADDY RYAN

There are some vital games yet to be played in the round robin Munster Under 20 HC.

This Friday evening Cork travel to FBD Semple Stadium, Thurles for a meeting with the home side. Both teams have full points entering this game. Tipperary have played two matches recording wins over Waterford (1-21 to 0- 15) and following with a 3-18 to 1-17 victory over Limerick.

Cork have 3 games played and are on full points. The Rebels had a 0-21 to 1-10 win over Waterford. They followed with a 2-22 to 1-19 win over Clare. Last week Cork accounted for Limerick in

SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh by 1-25 to 2-20.

This is the Rebels’ last game. Tipperary will still have to play Clare in their concluding round in Thurles on May 10. Limerick, who lost their last game v Waterford, have lost their chance of making the knockout stages. Clare have two remaining matches v Waterford and Tipperary and they could make the semi-finals.

Tipperary are coached by Brendan Cummins. One of their key players is Ronan Connolly (Cashel King Cormacks) who played with the senior side on Sunday last. Ben Currivan (Golden Kilfeakle) is their captain. Other players of note are Cathal English (Fr

Sheehy’s) and Paddy McCormack (Borrisoleigh).

Cork have a very well balanced team and are coached by Ben O’Connor. Key players include Jack Leahy (Dungourney), Diarmuid Healy (Lisgoold), Oran O’Regan (Erins Own), Cillian Tobin (Bride Rovers) and Ben Walsh (Killeagh).

Regardless of the result of Friday evening’s game, Cork will still be at least in the semi-final. For the record, Cork won this title in 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2023. Tipperary were champions in 2019 and Limerick won the title in 2022. Waterford’s last success was in 2016, while Clare won the title in recent years in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
