Junior hurlers continue their winning ways

-

Last Monday evening our Junior hurlers faced off against old rivals Ballyhea in the third round of the Cavanagh’s of Fermoy Division Two Hurling League.

Conditions were favourable for this encounter which was played on the old pitch at the Ballyhea venue. The home side were first to hit the target, but this was quickly cancelled out by a Liam Óg Hegarty point from play and after 10 minutes played, they held the scoring advantage of 0-03 to 0-01. Over the next 5 minutes Kilworth really came into the reckoning with Leo Coffey recording a quick 1-01 and Liam Óg converting a ‘65. Ballyhea however didn’t sit back and followed up with 6 nicely taken points to Kilworth’s 2 courtesy of Daniel O’Regan and Liam Óg and held a 1-point advantage at the half-time whistle, 0-09 to 1-05.

INCREASED WORK RATE

One could argue that Kilworth’s shooting in the opening half was sketchy with the wide count clocking up to 7, however for the remaining 30 minutes the team’s work rate increased dramatically with the away side scoring 3-07 to Ballyhea’s 0-08.

Liam Óg opened the scoring after the interval with a concerted free which was quickly followed by a point from Leo to level proceedings once again. Almost immediately Sean Beecher added his name to the scoresheet with a well taken goal leading from the outcome of some great Kilworth outfield teamwork. For the next 10 minutes both Ballyhea and Kilworth kept the umpires busy waving white flags until Darragh

Sheehan found the net with a sweet strike on the 50th minute to send Kilworth on their way. Two further scores followed from Leo before another solid Beecher strike sailed past the Ballyhea keeper which saw Kilworth prevail on a full-time score of 4-12 – 0-17.

Up next, Kilworth face Newtownshandrum at home this coming Saturday evening where they will be hoping to add further points to the league standings. Kilworth will want to avenge on last season’s Championship encounter between the sides which saw the green and gold side come triumph by 7 points.

Team and scorers: Kieran Walsh, Gearoid Carey, John Horgan, Kieran Twomey, Brian Dunne, Sean Óg Kenneally, Conor Hynes, Michael O’Callaghan, Daniel O’Regan 0-01, Anthony Sheehan, Sean Beecher 2-00, Brian Casey, Darragh Sheehan 1-00, Liam Óg Hegarty 0-06 (0-01f, 0-01-65”), and Leo Coffey 1-05. Substitutes used: Jason Twomey, Cathal Donnellan, Sean Moriarty, Aaron Browne, and Kenny Murphy.
