Grange suffer narrow league defeat

-

Last week we played our fourth game of the league campaign when we welcomed Kildorrery to Grange. In what was a very lively game the visitors opened brightly and raced in to a 3 point lead before we got on the scoresheet through a long range Gavin Dawson free. That was followed soon after by a lovely goal from Gavin Carmody following some good approach play. Kildorrery responded with a couple of points before Devon Roche marked his return to action with a fine point from play to leave the halftime score Grange 1-2 Kildorrery 0-8.

A youthful Kildorrery side were full of running but the Grange lads played some excellent football in the second half. Some lovely attacking play yielded points for John Carmody and Darren O’Riordan before Gavin Carmody got his second goal of the night with a wonderful finish. Kildorrery responded with a couple of well taken points before 2 more Darren O’Riordan points were followed by a monster effort from Gavin Dawson from a free which left us 3 points up entering the closing stages. However, Kildorrery kept pressing and were rewarded with 2 goals. The Grange defence will be annoyed by the manner in which these goals were conceded as both came from efforts for points which dropped short but weren’t dealt with and Kildorrery’s attackers got in behind on both occasions to apply the finishing touches.

Niall McCarthy responded with a fine score from the right and Grange kept attacking until the end in search of an equalising goal but it never came and so we finished up losing on a scoreline of Grange 2-8 Kildorrery 2-11. This performance was a huge improvement on our previous 2 league games and hopefully this is a sign of things to come with the championship approaching. With more players returning to action on a weekly basis our squad is getting stronger and there will be keen competition for places on the championship team.
