Strong victory for U14 footballers in division 1 championship

-

Our U14 footballers took on St Kevins in Glanworth on Friday last. St Dominics started strongly with a first minute point by Eoin Sheedy. This was quickly followed by five points in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th minutes by Cristian Connolly (3), Kash Szwarc and Tom Lee. Michael Coughlan in corner back showed great defending and cleared a nice ball down the line to Tom Lee. Forwards Robbie O’Neill, James O’Keeffe and Luke O’Donnell made some excellent passes but the ball unfortunately went out over the line.

The passing and teamwork all over the field was immense. A lovely pass from Robbie O’Neill in wing forward to Luke O’Donnell finished in an 18th minute point. Rory Murray, Warren O’Neill and Joe McGrath in the halfback line kept the St Kevins forwards in tow with their brilliant defending and turning over ball. Colm Walsh in the centre of the field won and created great ball on the night, winning advantage in the 20th minute which was pointed by Cristian Connolly.

It was a quiet half for the fullback line of Cian Browne, Fionn O’Connell and Michael Coughlan, along with goalkeeper Jamie Coleman whose kick outs were super. Robbie O’Neill was great at running and applying pressure on the wings, overturning a ball which was passed

onto Eoin Sheedy. Eoin let the ball do the work and drove it into the forwards, Cristian Connolly won the ball in the sky but slipped on landing and unfortunately had to come off injured. It’s fair to say he left his mark. Joey Gibson came on in his replace and scored a nice point in the 26th minute. A strong St Dominics team kept St Kevins scoreless in the first half. The score at half time 0-09 to 0-00.

THE SECOND HALF ACTION

St Dominics were determined to keep the hard work up in the second half, with Eoin S winning the throw-in, this was worked into Joey G whose shot on goal was saved by the St Kevins goalkeeper. Joe McG, Michael C and Fionn O’C were excellent in defence to force a wide from St Kevins.

A long kick out by Jamie C was won by Luke O’D who passed the ball to Tom L, who then found Joey G who buried it in the back of the net. St Dominics won the kick out from this and was pointed by Eoin S. Matt McGrath and Jamie Burke came on as St Dominic’s substitutions. Nice passing from Eoin S to Jamie B back to Eoin S and onto Joey G was finished in a point. In the 8th minute Fionn O’C won a high ball which was drove up the field, won by Jamie B who made an unreal pass to Kash S who was quick to find the back of the net.

Eoin S scored another point in the 10th minute this time from a free. Jamie C made a brilliant save not long after which went out for a 45. Charlie Gallagher, Tristan Curran and Daniel Sheedy came on as substitutions. In the middle of the second half St Kevins found their stride and were strong in attack. Jamie Coleman caught a high ball that dropped short. Eoin Sheedy was dominant all over the field, this time saving a shot on goal which went out for a 45, St Kevins worked this back in and tried hard for a goal but Eoin saved it again.

GREAT COMPOSURE

St Kevins were rewarded for their efforts scoring 2-01 between the 18th and 24th minute. Tristan C saved a brilliant shot in the 22nd minute. St Dominics must be commended for their passing and supportive play, which was highlighted in the closing minutes of the 2nd half when Michael C won a free. This was taken by Colm W who passed onto Jamie B, who passed it onto Kash S before being passed to and pointed by Eoin S. This team show great composure on the ball and always have options. The boys showed some great teamwork with Oisin Noonan responsible for clearing a lot of passes out of defence and worked up along through Joey Gibson and John Dunne, good to see their vision and progression.

The second half saw Charleville rally, kicking three points and only for some important interceptions from fullbacks Sean McAuliffe and Rory Fuller along with two great saves from our goalie Rojus Rimgaila, they would have had a lot more scores.

St Dominics added two more goals from Danny O’Keeffe and a point to finish off a great morning’s work with a final scoreline of 4-4 to 0-4.

U13s played Grenagh on Monday evening. This turned out to be a fantastic game of hurling with great scores and defending from both teams.

Kash Swarcz got us off the mark with a great point as both teams exchanged points in the early stages. Sean Barry kept the scoring ticking over from a free. The game flowed with great scores from both teams and at half-time it was all square at 1-03 each.

Grenagh started the second half strongly and knocked over a few points from distance. But again our lads battled back with accurate frees from Sean Barry along with well taken goals from Kash Swarcz and Danny O’Keeffe. Grenagh’s accuracy from distance ensured a nail-biting finish. Great defending from John Dunne and Oisin Noonan kept our goal intact with Sean Barry, Tristan Curran and Daniel Sheedy working hard around the middle as we pushed for the win. We went close with Danny O’Keeffe hitting the bar and Matt Coughlan going close with the follow up. Again, Grenagh scoring from distance continued as they finished strong and ran out winners.
