Juniors come up short in local derby
Bride Rovers made the short trip to Castlelyons last Tuesday to play us in the Division 2 East Cork Hurling League. The Rathcormac side play at Junior A level so we knew they would be a stiff test for this team.
Castlelyons played with the slight breeze in the first half but it was the visitors that started the better with a couple of pointed frees. Castlelyons were finding it difficult to get a foothold in the game and were relying on Brian O’Donovan’s accuracy from placed balls to keep in touch. There wasn’t an inch given or taken as one would expect in a match against close rivals. Conor McCarthy at centre back was hurling well with Brian Spillane and Cees Kouwenberg looking dangerous if we could get the ball in quickly enough to them. Rob Feeney was doing well at midfield with Ronan Fenton working hard under the puck outs. The half-time score read 0-09 to 0-07 to the Rovers.
Castlelyons fought back in the second half and picked up their performance. Shane Cotter, Colm McCarthy and Brian Spillane all getting on the scoresheet. Bride Rovers engineered a goal after 50 minutes and it proved to be the pivotal score in the game. Their half forward won a long puck out and ran through the middle of the field only to find a free team mate on the overlap who buried it past Gavin O’Neill in the Castlelyons’ goals. Castlelyons responded well with Brian O’Donovan firing over a sideline and substitute Darran Tobin closing the gap to a point. As time ran out we tried our best to force a goal that might reverse our fortunes but the Rovers scored the last 2 points to win on a scoreline of 1-15 to 0-15. A very entertaining game even if the result didn’t go our way.
