Fermoy 1-11 Clyda Rovers 0-11

Fermoy collected their second victory from their four games played to date in the McCarthy Insurance Cork Div 2 FL, when they had a goal to spare over Clyda Rovers in this all Avondhu meeting at Fermoy on Sunday.

The opening sequences saw both sets of defences have the upperhand, with scores certainly at a premium. In the ninth minute Ben Nyhan set up Conor Flanagan for a point with Eoin Walsh doubling Clyda Rovers’ lead two minutes later with a point from a free. The resultant kickout by Liam Coleman saw Fermoy break down the field to score the only goal of the game, when a quick pass by Arlen Aherne caught the Rovers defence off guard to release Padraig de Roiste who finished to the net.

At the end of the first quarter, de Roiste followed with a point when he picked up possession from a Dale Dawson free - 1-1 to 0-2.

Exchanges were closely contested for the remainder of the half. The impressive Eoin Walsh had four points for the Mourneabbey side, while Fermoy landed points from Adam Creed, Padraig de Roiste and Ross O'Sullivan, as they held a 1-4 to 0-6 interval lead.

On the changeover, Fermoy were first into the action. From the throw in Tomas Clancy and Padraig de Roiste linked up well to set up Dale Dawson whose effort at goal went narrowly over the bar for a point. Clyda Rovers’ response was immediate with Kevin Graham kicking over a fine point following good work by Niall Burke.

Over the next couple of minutes Padraig de Roiste and Cian Walsh traded points, but it was Fermoy that were creating most of the running at this juncture with Peter Murphy, Greg Lardner, Ronan Morrison, Tomas Clancy, Shane Aherne, Padraig de Roiste, Arlen Aherne and substitute David Lardner making their presence felt. Two pointed frees by Lardner moved them 1-8 to 0-8 clear before a great movement involving Ross O'Sullivan, Luke Aherne and Dale Dawson saw Arlen Aherne kick over a fine point, as they moved four clear with ten minutes of normal time remaining.

Clyda Rovers battled back in the closing stages with Eoin Walsh, Gary Deane, Kevin Graham and Cian Walsh making headway. Eoin Walsh had a point from a free in the 58th minute. From the kickout Gary Deane and Cian Walsh combined well to set up Sean O'Sullivan who closed the gap to two points.

However there was no denying Fermoy victory and they completed the scoring in injury time when great work by substitute Sean Power set up Arlen Aherne for a point, as they emerged victors by a three point margin.
