The late Hazel Baylor continues to be remembered
The late Hazel Baylor is remembered across Fermoy for her vast contributions to the town and its community and the positive mark she left on
the area can be noted, with a plaque erected recently in her memory on a bench located outside Christ Church.
The source of the plaque however appears to be a bit of a mystery, it would appear being erected anonymously. A resident of Adair House, former principal of Adair NS and active volunteer at the Church of Ireland, as well as being a member and volunteer at many other organisations and groups within the town, Hazel had many strings to her bow and the source of the plaque could be from any number of persons or organisations.
Adair NS confirmed to TheAvondhu that the plaque was not erected by the school, while several other individuals have stated that they have no knowledge of who erected the fitting memorial, which simply reads 'Hazel Baylor Educator 1936 - 2022.'
For many years, Hazel Baylor taught all eight classes of children attending Adair NS and was well known within the educational community in Fermoy. She was also known across various clubs, groups, voluntary organisations and charities, helping out a range of good causes, including at Christ Church, with Fermoy Resource Centre, Fermoy Ploemeur Twinning Association,
etc.
Hazel is fondly remembered by those in the town and beyond as an outgoing, engaging woman who was not afraid to get involved and help out where needed, but is also remembered for her humble nature and modesty, a tribute which may be shared with whoever paid tribute to her with this simple plaque. Her memory in town will live on for many years to come.
