U15 SOCCER

The U15 soccer players of St Colman’s College, Fermoy took on Mitchelstown CBS in the Cork Schools Trophy semi-final on April 30th in Carrig Park, Fermoy.

The game started at lightning pace with Mitchelstown CBS taking an early lead with only 1 minute on the clock. This lead was short lived after Colman’s equalised on the 5th minute through Donnchadh Dingivan.

In a tit-for-tat encounter CBS retook the lead on the 9th minute as the goals began flying in early on. Colman’s came close through Iwo Szostak as they searched to peg back the Mitchelstown outfit. The equalising score came soon after as Donnchadh netted again to leave the score at 2 goals apiece with only 12 minutes of the game played. A tactical change, which shifted Conor Lynch into the back-line, proved to be decisive in plugging the hole in the defence.

CBS came close to regaining the lead only for some excellent defending by Ciaran O’Donovan. Donnchadh Dingivan on 22 minutes gathered the ball and after a solo run managed to find the net for his hat-trick and give Colman’s the lead for the first time in the game. A beautiful through ball from John Walsh, split the CBS defence, and sent Ger Murphy into space where he rounded the keeper and slotted home to extend Colman’s lead and leave the score in Colman’s favour at 4-2 approaching the break. Donnchadh rounded off the half with his 4th goal of the afternoon leaving the half-time score St. Colman’s College 5 Mitchelstown CBS 2.

The second half began with Colman’s in a commanding position after early CBS dominance. This continued following a CBS attempt which was stopped by Jack Cotter in goal who distributed then ball forward and over the top to Donnchadh Dingivan who lobbed the goalkeeper to get his 5th goal of the day and extend the lead on 50 minutes.

James Buckley on the 65th minute gathered the ball on the edge of the box and with a long range effort found the net for Colman’s 7th of the day. Some eagle-eyed spectators may suggest that Darragh Costigan may have gotten a touch. St. Colman’s held possession and ran out 7-2 winners on the day heading for the Cork trophy final.

The final is due to be played the week beginning May 13th.
