No joy on the hurling front

-

After a few weeks’ break our Intermediate hurlers returned to the field last Friday evening to contest Youghal in the third round of the Red FM Division 4 Hurling League. Conditions were fair for this encounter which was played at Youghal’s Magnier’s Hill venue.

Kilworth were first to hit the scoreboard in this high scoring contest and after 17 minutes played the sides were on level terms sharing 1-08 apiece, with the Kilworth goal coming from the stick of Cormac Donnellan after a great long range solo run by Leo Coffey. Michael Sheehan found the net on the 19th minute to put Kilworth 2 points in front, but it was the home side that finished the strongest with some well taken points and they led by 4 points at the interval, 2-09 to 2-13.

Youghal started the second half just as they finished the first and quickly had a further 3 points notched up to extend their lead to 7. Kilworth responded with some great taken scores through some excellent passages of play and by the 50 minute had reduced Youghal’s advantage back to 2 points with Sean Keane’s effort raising the green flag. The home side dug deep for the remaining 10 minutes and finishing the strongest to run out winners on a fulltime score of 2-22 to 3-15.

JUNIOR HURLING LEAGUE

The following evening attention fell to the Junior Hurlers as they welcomed Newtownshandrum in the fourth round of the Cavanagh’s of Fermoy Division Two Hurling League.

Newtownshandrum started the strongest in this encounter which was played in front of a nice Kilworth contingent and after 15 minutes played led 0-06 to 0-02. A Kilworth goal by Liam Óg Hegarty which was delivered through a sweet Thomas Twomey pass on the 21st minute gave us a 1 point advantage. Both teams continued to raise white flags and the score was tied 1-05 to 0-08 at the interval.

The remaining 30 minutes of play mostly fell to Newtown’s advantage as they notched up a 3-point lead after 19 minutes. Kilworth to their credit never faded and once again fought back to get to within 1 point but it was the away side that saw out the remaining 10 minutes with 4 points on the bounce and were deservedly winners come the full-time whistle on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-18.
