RED FM HURLING LEAGUE DIV 2 RD 5 Fermoy 1-12 Newtownshandrum 0-12

What was a better way to try and recover from our defeat to Carrigaline than to encounter the mighty stronghold of Newtownshandrum in our next game? We were short a few regulars on Friday evening due to injury, work commitments and unavailability but we still had a strong side available and we were hoping for a good bounce back from the previous game. As you can see from the score, this was a very tight and close encounter all the way through with a crucial goal from Adam Creed making the difference between the sides. There was no holds barred as well as tackles were flying in and referee Aidan Hyland had his hands full trying to keep the play going as well as keeping the peace.

Fermoy started off very well with the ball moving at pace and players running the angles to receive passes. This was a joy to behold and should have led us to being well in front after 10 minutes but unfortunately we were wasteful by shooting wides and dropping shots in to their goalkeeper’s hands. It bodes well for the future that we are creating a lot of chances and when we get our shooting sorted we will be in very good stead.

As I said we were on top for the opening minutes playing fast flowing hurling. We eventually opened the scoring in the 5th minute with Darragh Daly, returning from injury, slotting over a “65”. It was Darragh who struck over our second point from play on 7 minutes, before Newtown opened their account with a point from play in the 8th minute. The game was level in the 10th minute, when Newtown scored a free but we edged ahead again on 11 minutes with a Darragh free. Shane Aherne was giving their full back a torrid time in the inside line and got his reward with two points in the 15th and 16th mins respectively.

A GREAT GOAL

Our opponents scored from a free on 17 minutes but it was that man again, Darragh, who popped up with our sixth point to make it Fermoy 0-06 to Newtown 0-03 on 18 minutes. Newtown responded again with a point on 20 minutes before we came up with the goal that made the difference in the end. Peter Murphy received the ball from goalie Conor Quinn on his own “45” and sprinted up the field. He noticed that Shane had moved at pace to the opposite wing and send a beautiful pass out in front of Shane. Shane gracefully outfoxed the fullback and made his way towards their goal. As he ran along the end line he spotted Adam Creed on his own and sent the ball across to Adam who gratefully accepted it and crashed the sliotar past their helpless goalie. Newtown seemed a bit shocked at this stage but responded well with a pointed free on 24 minutes.

We kept our composure as our opponents upped their game and it was Brendan Daly who got the next score for us on 27 minutes to put us five points ahead again. Newtown finished the half with two points, a free on 28 minutes and one from play on 29 minutes which was the final score of the half. The referee blew the half-time whistle to give us all a breather after a very entertaining first half with Fermoy definitely deserving to be ahead. Half-time: Fermoy 1-07 Newtownshandrum 0-07.

HOLDING FIRM THROUGH SECOND HALF

The second half did not live up to the standard of the first half but from a Fermoy viewpoint our boys stood up to our opponents and to a man did not back down. A Newtown free got the scoring going after 32 minutes but we restored our three point lead with a Darragh free in the 34th minute. Arlen Aherne popped up for a point in the 35th minute to put us four ahead but Newtown cancelled that out with a point from play on 37 minutes. From here until the end of the game this pattern took shape with our opponents endeavouring to cut down our lead but we held firm through hard work and intensity.

Newtown made it a 2 point game with a point on 44 minutes but sub James Molloy regained our 3 point advantage on 47 minutes. A Newtown free on 50 minutes kept our nerves on edge but these were allayed when Darragh scored a point in the 53rd minute. They countered this with a point on 56 minutes and again Darragh struck over his 7th point of the game on 57 minutes to leave a goal between the sides. Newtown got a couple of close in frees towards the end but Conor made a brilliant save from one of these shots to keep us ahead.

UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT

There was an unsavoury incident towards the end as a fracas ensued, which saw two players, one from each side, red-carded. This was a pity as the game was tough but up to that point very fair with no bad strike from either team. The final whistle was blown shortly after this and we were delighted to hold on for a well-deserved victory. This result leaves us on three points after five games. Our next game is against Bride Rovers in Rathcormac on May 16th at 19.30.

CAVANAGH’S OF FERMOY CENTENARY HL DIVISION 2 ROUND 3 Fermoy 1-20 Ballyhea 1-15

I was unable to attend this league game played in Ballyhea on Sunday last. I want to thank Mike O’Brien for supplying me with the team and scorers who travelled to Ballyhea. There were 25 players on the day’s panel and each of them got game time which is absolutely brilliant. The boys played very well and this can be seen by getting 1-20 on the scoreboard.

The list of scorers was Niall Cloney, Brian McGrath, Brendan Daly, Craig Murphy, Paudie Shanahan, Craig Roche, James Fitzpatrick and Eoin Canty, who scored our goal. Well done to everyone on a fine result and also to everyone who travelled. We are fourth in the table after four games with one remaining game versus Kilworth which will be played on Thursday, 16th May in Fermoy at 7.15pm.
