Christy Brien R.I.P.

-

At the time of writing the club was holding a guard of honour for esteemed clubman Christy Brien, who passed to his eternal reward last week.

Christy arrived in Lismore from Co Meath with a love for football but quickly adapted to the hurling tradition that was engrained in the local GAA club. Christy was held in high regard within Lismore GAA and excelled at all the positions he held over the years. From administration to fundraising, he did it all. An excerpt from his outgoing secretary's report in 1996 reads as follows - "A Chairde, Is maith liom Tuarasscail an Runaí don bhliain 1996 a chur os chur gcoir inniu. I am pleased to present my secretary's report to our annual general meeting tonight for the year 1996 which has drawn to a close. When we set out in 1996 as holders of the AIB Club of the Year award for 1995, expectations were high and ambitions were focused on retaining the title for 1996. From an early stage our sights were set on achieving as many divisional and county titles as possible. We had teams entered in every grade of hurling and we had a healthy involvement in football. This club would be envied by many other clubs for its success rate in the last year but I think we would be less than satisfied with our haul of trophies especially when we failed to win the county senior hurling championship, when in the final, up until the closing stages, we looked the assured winners.

On my own behalf, I would like to thank my fellow officers and committee and all those whom I had to work with, sometimes under pressure and sometimes without agreement on every detail, but at all times for the good of the club and because I probably liked doing

it! However after about 25 years serving Lismore GAA Club in some capacity as a player, committee member and officer, I feel it is time to let go. I wish whoever is chosen as the new secretary of Lismore GAA Club the best of luck next year and in years to come. Lois sin guim Rath Dé oraibh go léir agus ar obair na bliana seo chugainn … Is mise le meas … Chríostóir Ó Briann."
