Fermoy reenforces 'poster-free' status
Apologies were extended on Wednesday after posters for the upcoming European election were mistakenly erected in Fermoy, which, historically, has been a poster-free zone.
On Wednesday, posters for sitting MEP Billy
Kelleher were noted on Kent Bridge and across from the courthouse in the town.
Posters have generally been erected during previous election campaigns on the outskirts of the town and further out the approach roads, however, within the town, election candidates have been requested not to erect posters.
“Fermoy has been a poster free zone in excess of 20 years. This has been acknowledged by political parties and their local organisations for the best part of a quarter centuary", one local told The Avondhu.
“Initially, it would be requested and the local organisations would ask people not to put their posters up in the town, but for the European candidates, they get it subcontracted and they may not be as familiar with this as the local political candidates”.
BEING REMOVED
When contacted, a spokesperson for Mr Kelleher confirmed that they were aware of the situation and that their party's headquarters were contacted, as postering is carried out by HQ.
“We were informed that the company they hired were told to stay outside the 50km zone but they obviously ignored this instruction. HQ have said the company has been told to go out and remove them.
“We unreservedly apologise and we are very disappointed that this has happened. It was unnecessary and avoidable and regrettably outside our control,” the response read.
