THE Lon­don North East­ern Rail­way com­pany (LNER) com­menced op­er­a­tions on the East Coast at the end of June, tak­ing over from Virgin Trains East Coast.

Ser­vices will be op­er­ated un­der the LNER name for at least two years un­til a new con­tract is granted fol­low­ing the ter­mi­na­tion of the fran­chise un­der Virgin Trains East Coast and Stage­coach. Virgin took over the route in March 2015 and in­vested £75mil­lion in im­prov­ing ser­vices. It also made prepa­ra­tions to roll out the new fleet of 65 Azuma trains.
