HOTEL: THE CAVENDISH, LONDON

-

THE HOTEL The Cavendish is located on Jermyn Street, just off bustling Piccadilly, and a short walk from Green Park Underground station. Part of Singaporean hospitality group The Ascott Limited, the hotel has 223 guestrooms and seven suites.

THE CHECK-IN The ground floor lobby is smart if relatively unremarkable, with subtle art deco design touches and grey decor. It was quiet when I checked in late one afternoon and the staff member on reception had trouble locating my reservation but was very apologetic as I waited. I was briefed on wifi access and breakfast service and directed to my room on the 12th floor.

THE ROOM The Cavendish is the tallest building on Jermyn Street so I had an impressive uninterrupted view eastwards across the capital from my window. The décor was simple and stylish with striped furnishings, black and white framed photography, and one sinuous wooden panelled wall. Furniture included a chaise longue, coffee table, desk and large wardrobe. Amenities included a Bose sound system, Nespresso coffee machine, large safe and iron/ironing board. The good-sized bathroom had a bath and separate walk-in shower. Room service is available around the clock.

THE FACILITIES A good buffet breakfast was served in the first floor Petrichor restaurant which has a 2AA Rosette rating. Lunch and dinner menus feature ‘seasonally inspired’ European dishes while lighter bites are also available in the adjacent bar and lounge. Afternoon tea is also available. There are five meeting rooms, all with natural daylight, ranging in capacity from the Nimbus room for 11 people up to the Alto room for 80 delegates. On-site parking is available and there’s complimentary wifi access throughout and a couple of computers available for guest use by the lobby.

THE VERDICT This a good upscale hotel in a convenient location for those on business in the Mayfair and

Piccadilly areas – and further afield given its proximity to two central Underground stations. The hotel’s understated style is complemented by the staff who were unfailingly cheerful and helpful.
