Indeed, a breeze assisted Rockchapel answered, capitalisi­ng on indiscreti­ons for Collins and Ian Guiney add pointed frees. And the Duhallow side were firmly in the driving from the 27th min., tormentor in chief Hickey robbed possession for Murphy to slip the attention of the Mayfield rearguard to net.

Mayfield attemped a response, breaking a barren 24 minute without a score for Condon to register their initial point to trail 34 to 1-1 at the interval. Backed by the breeze, Mayfield charged out of the starting blocks upon the resumption, Cranking up their level of performanc­e big time, the intensity of Mayfield’s improvemen­t stemmed from the efforts of David O’Neill, Shane Fitzgerald, Shane O’Donovan and Condon.

Target man Condon pointed and Collins cancelled it for Rockchapel, Mayfield put their shoulder to the wheel on a run of four points to Condon, O’Donovan and Roy Scannell helped cut the arrears 3-6 to 1-7 at the three quarter mark. However, their hopes were dimmed on the dismissal of defender Seán O’Sullivan as Rockchapel got their second wind from points to Collins and Guiney.

A spirited Mayfield never gave up but relied principall­y on Condon for scores. At the opposite end, Hickey remained a threat to find the target when required. Hard though a spirited Mayfield attempted to save the day in their pursuit of a goal, they failed to penetrate a stubborn Rockchapel rearguard.
