CELEBRATING CRAFT OF THE BLACKSMITH AT FAIR
THIRD TRADITIONAL CRAFTS AND BLACKSMITHING FAIR HELD
THE CRAFT of the blacksmith remains popular and was celebrated at the third Traditional Crafts and Blacksmithing Fair at Millstreet Country Park last week.
A relaxed, festive atmosphere prevailed with patrons availing of the bank holiday weekend to convene at the picturesque location.
Highlights of the fair included demonstrations by members the Irish Artist Blacksmiths Association (IABA) who, using the anvil, the hammer and the forge fire, delighted and fascinated spectators of all ages.
This year’s staging held a particular emphasis on wood turning.
Expert John Aherne, chairman of the Cork Wood-turners Guild demonstrated how to turn fallen trees into intricate shapes and beautiful, useful wooden objects.
Young and old viewed the skill, artistry and manipulation of iron and steel by dedicated craftsmen in a series of demonstrations.
Donie Howard, general manager of Millstreet Country Park said the annual event is very much in keeping with the ethos of the Park, showcasing the skills of our forefathers whilst maintaining ecological harmony with the environment.
“The fair encourages education, but also affords the public an opportunity to admire traditional techniques and the creation of beautiful pieces of art, whilst also enjoying good food and a myriad of family activities,” he said.
The 2014 season at Millstreet Country Park is action packed with a variety of events, activities and festivals happening each and every month with something different to either celebrate heritage or the outdoors lifestyle taking place.
In June the arrival of summer heralds both the Outdoor Adventure Festival and KiteFest in aid of Breakthrough Cancer Research.
KiteFest, now in its second year takes place on Sunday, June 15 featuring demonstrations of technical displays of professional stunt kite flying and an opportunity for young and old to go fly a kite in the open air, with proceeds going for a good cause.
July see’s the return of Ireland’s Annual Bug Festival and in August there’s the annual Family CycleFest a ‘pedal to the metal’ weekend encouraging families to make the best of the remainder of the summer holidays.
The cycling trails at Millstreet Country Park are open throughout the season and have been meticulously planned to allow pedal pushers of all ages and abilities to view the Parks most scenic aspects and enjoy their chosen route, leisurely or otherwise.
This year a new offer is available with Adult Yearly Membership costing just €20 and children can visit the park for free.
