Anti-Litter Challenge set to start this week

-

THE 2014 Cork County Council Anti-Litter Challenge is starting this week and will run at intervals through the month of June.

In a statement, Mallow Tidy Towns say for Mallow to be successful this year the help of everyone, especially the business community, is vitally important.

With this in mind, and hoping to place Mallow in a better position, MTT are asking all the businesses to clean outside their own buildings. This simply involves picking the litter and, especially, cigarette butts and sweeping the footpath and kerb.

Mallow Tidy Towns strive to show Mallow in it’s best possible light at all times. For the last number of years the group have entered this annual competition. In 2011 the town came in seventh place and the following year it rose to fourth place, missing out on the medals by only a few points.

Last year, despite everyone’s best efforts, Mallow fell down the rankings again but MTT are determined to do better this year, and it can be done if everybody helps.

Judges will judge 10 X 50 metre stretches of road on each of three visits and count all the litter in that area. This area goes from the wall/shop front to the white line in the middle of the road. Every piece of litter is counted with one chocolate bar wrapper counting as one piece of litter while ten cigarette butts are counted as one piece of litter.

The judging periods are from Monday, May 19 to Wednesday, May 28, Monday June 2 to Wednesday June 11 and Monday June 16 to Wednesday June 25.

Mallow Tidy Towns asks the public to be vigilant during these dates. You can follow Mallow's progress on the MTT Facebook page and if you requests results to be emailed to you please contact Anne at anneoneill1@eircom.net.
