Pupils honoured for outstanding contribution
BILL BROWNE PUPILS from St Mary's Secondary School in Mallow have been honoured for their outstanding contributions to school life over the past academic year.
More than 600 pupils, staff and proud parents gathered at the school sports hall last Friday for the annual awards ceremony, the highlight of what has been a hugely successful year at St Mary's.
Awards were handed out to students in a variety of categories recognising the academic, sporting and social achievements of the various winners.
Special guest Junior Minister Séan Sherlock was visibly impressed with the efforts of students and staff at St Mary's, praising them for their “outstanding energy”.
Minister Sherlock noted that each year the Mercy ethos at St Mary's ensured the school produces “well grounded individuals” who consistently go on to achieve great things.
He also congratulated school Principal Ms Yvonne Bane and her teaching staff for the passion and commitment they show to “higher order thinking”, particularly in the fields of science and mathematics.
One notable award winner was sixthyear Noreen Burke who has not missed a single day during her time at the school.
Nell O'Sullivan who was described by her fellow students as being both “hardworking and courteous” won the prestigious Student of the Year award.
The Catherin McAuley award went to LCA students Gina Dunne and Leanne Relihan for their work with the Homework Club.
Entertainment on the day was provided by the senior choir with their stirring rendition of 'Diamonds Are A Girl's Best friend and sixth-year duo Ciara Doherty and Niamh O'Reilly who had everyone singing along to 'Don't Worry Be Happy' and 'Mrs Robinson'.
The ceremony drew to a rousing finish with the entire school singing along to The Script's 'Hall of Fame' to a backdrop of images recalling another great year for St Mary's.
