PUPILS HONOURED AT ANNUAL AWARDS DAY IN COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL TOP CLASS IN BOHERBUE
Achievements across a wide range of disciplines were acknowledged at the Annual Awards ceremony at Boherbue Comprehensive School. “Our annual prize giving gives us the opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of our students both curricular and extra curricular” Principal Mary O Keeffe welcoming students and parents said. “We're very proud of our student body here, and while achieving high points is an important function of our school it certainly is not the only one, and we believe that the development of the whole child is equally as important” she said.
Mary thanked Dan and Geraldine Murphy of Dan Murphy Life and Pensions who has sponsored the awards for the past fifteen years.
Welcoming Eileen Linehan, Assistant Manager of IRD Duhallow who was guest of honour at the event, Mary continued “Eileen is a hugely positive role model and is exceptional in every way, she has displayed immense strength of character and is always very supportive of projects in the school, and is very giving of her time”.
Having congratulated all the students, Eileen urged them to “never give up, life is not always plain sailing and will throw lots of challenges at you, but there is something out there for everybody, so go and find your niche, life will teach you a lot more than any education, but obviously you need the education to get in the door to the workplace”.
The Awards Ceremony was organised by Treasa O Reilly, and the Citations which were read by Margaret Fitzgerald honoured Senior and Junior Cycle subject winners, Transition Year students for their achievements, Gaisce Awards, Volunteerism, Homework Club, Fundraising, Contribution to School ICT and Music, Attendance Awards, Student Council, Mentoring Scheme, Lip Dub, and Sports Awards.
Awards for Best Leaving and Junior Certs went to Mary Anne Stritch and Aoife Clifford. Corn an Runaí to Aoife Cronin, Transition Spirit Award to Jack O Connor, while the Student of the Year Award went to the hugely popular Anthony Casey from Kiskeam.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Board of Management Chairman Pat Favier congratulated everybody associated with the event particularly the students; “You are a shining light in a sometimes murky and cynical world”, he said, “here at Boherbue Comprehensive we find respect for individuals, cultivation of talent, and encouragement and support for young people of all abilities”.
