Remorial in honour of ‘my beauties’

- MARIA HERLIHY

A DUHALLOW mother who lost her husband, a young son, and unborn daughter is confident that the heavens will look after the weather in Meelin next weekend, as she holds a remeorial in their honour.

Elber Twomey has suffered a mountain of grief in June 2012, when her husband Connie, son Oisin and unborn daughter Elber Marie had their lives wiped out when their car was hit by a suicidal taxi driver, Marek Wojciechowski in Devon, UK.

However, despite her suffering, she is determined that no other family should suffer as she has. She along with family and host of friends have now organised a remeorial on June 6-8 in Meelin.

On Friday night, Barnacurra native and musical genius Liam O'Connor will take to the stage at the Hi-land in Newmarket and he has also organised that the GAA legend Micheal O Muircheartaigh will also be present.

Elber told The Corkman that she is so grateful to everyone, especially Liam O'Connor, who have come on board to help with the remeorial “I am looking forward to the remeorial weekend, but of course it will be very difficult for me, too, as I have lost so much in my life. It will be emotional,” said Elber.

Liam O'Connor said that he was delighted to help and support Elber. “This is a big night and it's for a great cause. I hope that people will come out and support the entire weekend,” he said.

Elber said that the people in Duhallow have just been “truly fantastic,” and are more than willing to help in any way that they can. She is hoping that people will go to Meelin over the weekend and give their support, but also for people to enjoy the weekend of events, which should serve as a reminder of just how precious life is.

On Saturday, June 7 at 5pm sharp, a four mile family walk will start at the square in Meelin. Then at 6.30pm, there will be a four mile run, which will be held in association with the Duhallow Athletic Club. Registration for both events will be open at 3pm.

On Sunday, at 8.30am, there will be a charity cycle of both 110km and 50km and this will kick off at Rockchapel Community Centre. There will also be GAA blitzes, a table quiz, football matches and a special mass.

Money raised from all events will go to the hospitals which looked after Elber and her family after the tragedy and this includes Torbay Hospital in Torquay, Derriford Hospital in Plymouth and Cork University Hospital.

“The money will also help promote suicide prevention and suicide awareness in the hope that it will help prevent another family from our tragic story,” Elber added.

The three charities which will also benefit will be Inspire Ireland, Suicide Aware (Cork) and the 3Ts in Dublin as well as Pieta House.
