Awards day at CBS

-

THE end of year awards ceremony for the students of C.B. S. Secondary School, Charleville took place at the Community Hall last week when special guest veteran broadcaster Micheal O Muircheartaigh was on hand to present the awards to the students.

The attendance was welcomed to the event by student Darragh Browne, the chairperson of the school’s students council, who thanked the Principal Maurice Keohane and the teaching staff along with the other members of the school community for their dedication to teaching the students over the years.

In his address, Mr O Muircheartaigh said this was a great day for the students of the school, especially those in their final year and it is a day that will mean an awful lot to them in years to come as their days at the school will be talked about when ever they meet.

“It is a time of great hope for the future as you face into the next phase of your education and I urge you never to quit if you have a bad day because there is always hope that the next day will be better,” he said.

He urged the students to be independent and to do their own thing and not to be a member of the pack. “The youth of today are confident individuals, more so than those of years past, and they have minds of their own and are not afraid to make their views known,” he said.

Mr Maurice Keohane, principal of C.B.S. said that this was a very important day for the school at the end of the school year and he thanked the teaching staff for providing the students with a balanced education for their all round development, which he said, is what makes the C.B.S. Charleville the excellent school it is.

Leaving Certificate student Darragh Cotter from Ballyagran, Co. Limerick was declared Student of the Year and he received a gold medal from Mr. Pat Savage, chairman of Charleville Credit Union.

Darragh hopes to go on to pursue a course in Business and French on completion of his Leaving Certificate examination.

The Bank of Ireland Junior Certificate Student of the Year Award went to Jack Murphy while Ivan Lenihan was voted the Junior Sportsman of the Year and Darren Casey took the award for Senior Athlete of the Year.
