DOUBLE UP AT THE MARQUEE

FREE BOB DYLAN AND NEIL YOUNG TICKETS TO MAKE UP FOR OUR ERROR LAST WEEK

- BILL BROWNE

DUE to an unfortunate printing error last week, our competition to give away tickets for The Coronas and Imelda May at the Marquee was not run in the newspaper. Apologies to all for the muck-up. Howevr, this week we are giving away a pair of tickets to each of these gigs in addition to offering readers the opportunity to catch two true legends of the global music industry - Bob Dylan and Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

Bob Dylan will take to the stage of the Marquee for the third time on Monday, June 16 having previously played the Docklands venue in 2006 and again in 2011.

The uncontested poet laureate of rock and roll, Dylan is arguably one of the most influential singer/songwriters of modern time.

Over a career spanning more than five decades Robert Allen Zimmerman has released 35 studio albums, almost 60 singles, 11 live albums, the 10 volume 'BootLeg Series' and 30 compilation albums.

From the very beginning he became a spokesman for disenfranchised youth, re-energising the folkmusic genre of the 1960s with his unique ability to reach listeners with thoughtful sophisticated lyrics.

Despite consistently played the role of the renegade; Dylan has managed to win legions of faithful fans with his seemingly effortless ability to switch between genres from folk to country to blues to good old fashioned rock and roll.

Having embraced the role of wandering troubadour, the 73-year-old shows no sign of slowing down and is doing what his mentor Woody Guthrie would have done has his health allowed - perform his songs for his adoring fans until he can sing no more.

As the great man himself says, “if you are going to be a performer, you've got to give it your all.”

Having played the Marquee on his own in 2008 Neil Young will return to the venue on Thursday, July 10 but this time he will return with his legendary band Crazy Horse in tow.

The Canadian singer began his musical career in 1960 coverings Shadows songs before moving to California in 1966 co-founding Buffalo Springfield with Stephen Stills and Richie Furey. Three years later he joined Crosby, Stills and Nash as the fourth member.

He is perhaps better known for his solo career, releasing more than 35 albums over four decades, including more than 20 with Crazy Horse.

Throughout his career Young has consistently explored musical boundaries, with his work characterised by his distinctive voice and guitar playing style, deeply personal lyrics and signature alto singing voice.

While Young has experimented with differing music styles his best known work usually falls into two primary styles: acoustic folk and country and electric amplified hard rock, very often in collaboration with Crazy Horse.

Young has also adopted elements from newer styles such as alternative rock and grunge. His influence on the latter caused some to dub him the Godfather of Grunge.

He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on two occasions; first as a solo artist in 1995 and again in 1997 as a member of Buffalo Springfield.
