O’Leary sisters dominate Rathcoole 5k road race

JOHN Barrett (Gneeveguil­la) took the spoils at the 2nd annual hosting to the Rathcoole 5k hosted in brilliant sunshine last Sunday. Staged under the auspices of the Rathcoole NS Parents Associatio­n in conjunctio­n with Duhallow AC, favourable weather added to the enjoyment with large numbers participat­ing in both the run and walk.

First home was experience­d Gneeveguil­la runner John Barrett in a fine time of 17 minutes, 34 seconds. Bilbao’s Tom Blackburn took runner up place in 18.04 ahead of Kilmallock’s P J Carey who finished on 18.13.

The O’Leary sisters from Millstreet dominated the female category, Caoimhe landing the spoils from Eimear and Orla. At underage boys, the prizes were collected by Donal Bourke, Donncha Murphy(Millstreet) and Brian Healy(North Cork).

Elsewhere, the Jack O’Keeffe road race looks ahead to 25th staging

The popular Jack O’Keeffe 4 mile Road race on Easter Monday, March 28 promises a record number of entries for the Boherbue to Kiskeam showpiece commencing at 2pm.

A top class field is expected in the featured senior mens category, Mallow based race co-ordinator Jack O’Keeffe and a native of Kiskeam indicates the 25th annual staging will accommodat­e some of the best road runners from Cork, Kerry and throughout Munster.

Last year, East Cork’s James McCarthy emerged a clearcut victor to complete back to back wins in glorious conditions at the Duhallow hosting.

Gneeveguil­la AC are promoting the programme sponsored by a great athletics stalwart in Jack O’Keeffe and its staging on the traditiona­l Bank Holiday Easter Monday attracts huge numbers to the hosting.

A full compliment of prizes are on offer for mens and ladies senior, junior, vets and wheelchair.

The diverse proceeding­s are underway in Kiskeam at 12 noon with juvenile Races catering for under 5 to under 14 boys and girls.

Changing facilities are available in Kiskeam Community Centre before the premier 4 Mile Road Race departs Boherbue Co-Op at 2pm and finishes in Kiskeam.
