Patrician Academy remembers 1916

-

THE pupils of the Patrician Academy with the assistance of their teachers organised a very thought provoking commemoration of the 1916 events which was held at Mallow Library last Thursday evening.

School principal Miss Fitzpatrick welcomed all to the ceremony and special guests were Cllr John Paul O’Shea County Mayor and Michael O’Neill from the Mallow Development Partnership who helped to organise the event.

The Mayor in his address congratulated the school for organising the commemoration and said that there has been over 500 1916 related events held throughout the county with almost half of them organised by schools in the region.

Many students took part in the library event while there was a musical performance by the school trad band. David Kearney and Ralph Buesmeil spoke about the work undertaken by the students in doing projects on the seven signatories while also writing poetry on the period.

Kevin Sexton read the Proclamation while Eoin Kenny gave an excellent delivery of Padraig Pearse’s graveside oration at the funeral of O’Donovan Rossa.

First year students Ben Buckley and Finnian Daly read their own compiled poems while James Cashman recited Easter 1916 by W.B. Yeats.

The event ended with closing words from Miss Fitzpatrick and the playing of Amhràn Na BhFiann by the school trad group.
