Churchtown hold out for comfortabl­e win

HL at Castletown­roche on Tuesday evening.

The overall balance and teamwork of the winners proved decisive as they held a slight lead all through. Thomas Fitzgibbon was very solid for Churchtown at centre back while up front Kieran Curtin took some very good scores. Castletown lacked scoring power but they had some good points by Mark O’Callaghan, Muiris Browne and Shay Mullane. At half time the winners were 1-8 to 0-7 clear, the goal by Shane Hedigan in the second minute.

Both sides exchanged points on the resumption as Churchtown led 1-11 to 0-11. James O’Callaghan had a goal for the winners in the 44th minute with Niall Hazelwood replying with a point 2-12 to 0-12. Points for the winners by John Quinn, James O’Callaghan, Kieran Curtin and Thomas Fitzgibbon made it 2-16 to 0-12 in the 53rd minute.

Niall Hazelwood had a late goal for Castletown­roche. Churchtown held out for a 9-point victory.
