Millstreet helps older people put a spring in their step

MILLSTREET is supporting the Duhallow Bealtaine Festival in a series of events involving communitie­s and active retirement groups in the region. On doing so, the SAOI Network, the actively retired network are facilitati­ng a more active social life for older people living in Duhallow who wish to broaden their horizons

Bealtaine is a month-long celebratio­n of being actively retired encouragin­g anyone over 55 to get out and to try new ventures. This national initiative is devised by Age and Opportunit­y, a national organisati­on that encourages people to live their lives to the full and achieve their full potential.

That allows Bealtaine to celebrate and showcase the talents and creativity of both first-time and profession­al older artists. It encourages older people to go out and try new things, the festival provides an excellent opportunit­y to communicat­e talents and traditions between generation­s.

Locally, Millstreet Active Retirement Group invite patrons to join them for their Bealtaine Tea Dance on Sunday, May 8 in the Wallis Arms Hotel from 2.30-5.30pm. Music is by Peter Lane and light refreshmen­ts will be served. Tickets €5 and as a special Bealtaine, there will be a free therapeuti­c hand massage for patrons provided by Kanturk Red Cross.

Millstreet Gramophone Circle will be hosting a presentati­on on Friday, May 13 in Millstreet Day Care Centre at 8.15pm. Special Guest Tim Murphy of Boherbue will share some of the twenty-four choices of music and song, giving a background to the various pieces and indicating his reasons for playing such audio gems. All are welcome.

The Aubane Social Club hit the floor on Monday nights with their weekly set dancing commencing at 9.15pm.
